"Chicago has some of the highest taxes on travelers in the nation. Whether it’s fees on transportation, steep taxes on lodging, or brazen shakedowns of entertainment and dining venues, local politicians find a way to get their slice."

This is ridiculously stupid, but not surprising from the typical whiners that haven't a clue. I was just in Houston and the hotel tax was 17%. My cab ride from the airport had a $4 fee just like here, but cost over $60, more than it would here. Plus we have the CTA to downtown. The sales tax there is a little lower. But no one cares. Tourism to Houston is half of tourism in Chicago, not surprising because the place is a dump.

Sloppy non-story (but this is pretty common of anything from IPI).

No data sources. No comparison of Chicago to other major tourism destinations in the U.S. No quantification of what "some of the highest taxes on travelers in the nation" means compared to the U.S. average.

Chicago has higher taxes on travelers than Des Moines? Well color me shocked.

^^This. Not that Chicago is a bastion of proper taxation, but even I understand the concept that if you want nice things, you have to pay for them.

Of course, I'm not defending our taxation. But this article was just plain stupid.

Yes. Most stuff from IPI is sloppy, and they most frequently cite “themselves” as sources. Might as well pull an article from a tabloid...
