At the end of July i'm moving to Chicago for work (only for 6 mos). I currently reside in NYC. In the last 2 years I have lived in NYC and LA so now i'm on to the 3rd largest city. My office is in the downtown area (Loop). I have friends from school that live in Lincoln Park so I am considering that area, however I am curious to find out what are the best areas of "downtown". I am looking for a studio preferably in a new building close to a happening area. Does the downtown area "die out" at night and on the weekends when all the commuters have gone home? What areas do young professionals generally frequent? Any recommendations would be deeply appreciated.

The loop does die out. What is your price range?

I would start your search with Lincoln Park, the Gold Coast/Streeterville, or Lakeview.

River North and Gold Coast have the most action (that is if you consider them downtown.) They are not in the Loop.

My range is in the 1200-1400 range. I found what seemed to be a nice place in the Fulton District/River North. Residences at K Bank or something it was called. Everything I find in Lincoln Park is quite old and i'm looking for a newer residence. Please advise.

That's still pretty much part of the loop and will be more deserted at night than the heart of River North would be. You'll be close to those vibrant busy areas though, just not really in them.

Do you mean Left Bank at K Station?

Yea that is the name of the property. Another one I found appeared to be condo rentals in River North (Plaza 440). If anyone has any info on these properties it would be much appreciated. Do a lot of the condo buildings also provide rentals?

Left Bank at K Station and its brand new sister residence Echelon at K station is in the new West Loop district which still isn't quite as developed as the west Gold Coast or River North. If you want newer, try Chestnut Tower (in west Gold Coast), or Kingsbury Plaza (in River North). For condo rentals, you would have to check an MLS listing or an apartment locator service because some private owners list through them as well.

Plus, the hi-rises are more likely to give you a short term lease than a private owner would, but the hi-rise would more than likely charge a premium (an extra $175 or so a month).

Some of the views at Left Bank @ K Station will likely be blocked by the future construction of 444 West Lake. If you want to live in a "happening area," I'd suggest the northeast portion of River North. Left Bank is located in a burgeoning part of River North that still has some growing to do before I'd considered it happening. Streeterville might also be a good place to search for places.
