I received a position at the Suncoke plant in East Chicago and will be looking for a place to move me and my wife and two infant and toddler boys. I don't particularly want to live around east Chicago as I don't hear too many good things about the area. So I am hoping someone on here could suggest a good family oriented suburb or community that we could move to. Our credit is not very good but before taxes I will be pulling $80k give or take. I don't mind a long commute if it means a safe place for my family to live at.

Thank you in advance!

The problem is that there aren't many good areas in Chicago near there. The East Side and Hegewisch are fine but are considered to be getting worse (you can be the judge yourself, though). Some parts of the SW side are alright (Mount Greenwood, Beverly), but you'll have a far commute. I imagine there's some nice parts of Northwest Indiana you could live in, try asking the IN forum.

Since you asked specifically for suburbs and communities (rather than neighborhoods in the city of Chicago), I would on both the Chicago suburbs forum and the Northwest Indiana forum. There are burbs on both sides of the state line where you might rather live than East Chicago, if you're looking for the suburban thing.

Well yes I I'd say suburbs but really I just want somewhere safe and good place to raise a family and was really hoping to try and live in Chicago.

I'd check the burbs along I-80 in Illinois, from Lansing west to Orland. I-80 should shoot you into East Chicago pretty easily.
