Remember the little guy that was on Fantasy Island? Herve Faleches? (spelling)
He was a dwarf that used most of his earnings from the show to build apartments for little people. Small furniture. Low cabinets and counters, etc.
He didn't even charge any rent.
He called them Stay Free Minipads.

There are a bunch of companies. . . Home Depot (and perhaps Lowes) sell "Katrina Cottages", there are plans for very small homes available online, good luck in your search!

I'm just thinking out loud as to whether some of these 'micro-houses' could pass the Chicago or other local building codes given firebreak and insulation requirements, plumbing and the like .. These are getting popular on the west coast ( I saw one that was 2 stories and 750 square feet) ..
I'd love to see a housing technology breakthrough in my lifetime..we're still building houses based on an 18th century pattern ..one would think w/ advances in materials sciences and the like we could do it better and more cheaply ..

Technology has changed, but humans haven't.

Living in tiny spaces can develop catastrophic consequences if things are not kept spotlessly clean. God forbid the plumbing should ever, ever fail. Things like that We have building codes for a reason, and although some of them are clearly the product of the mystic arts (and here in Cali in particular, rabid anti-development sentiment), many exist to solve problems we used to have with ourselves.

Also, last I heard, those Cubix units were going for nearly double $275,000.

yeah, but there didn't seem to be enough room in there to move the table and futon out of the way to pull one down!

I don't care how popular these apartments may be, but for me, having room for a good, comfortable bed is important! don't want to pay almost $300K to sleep on a futon or to keep pushing around furniture to pull down a potentially uncomfortable bed! I guess I can see the appeal if you have to be right there in the thick of it, but I need my space and beauty rest!

though I could definitely deal w/ a 750sqft house if I didn't have kids (or even had just one kid). I swear most of the apartments I saw in Pilsen aren't much bigger than this anyways!
