Well, back in 1893, a whole lot of people did.

From hydeparkhistory.org:

Quote:
By November 6th, 1,453,611 paid admissions had been received with possibly a thousand or more free trips having been given to various important people. The gross earnings were $726,805, of which $513,403 was retained by the company, giving them a profit of $395,000.
Chicago's Great Ferris Wheel of 1893

Granted, they didn't have cable back then...

Does anyone know who built the one at navy Pier? I thought it was Eli Bridge co. in Jacksonville, Illinois. The co. still exists and I thought I read somewhere that it was the only co. left in the world that builds ferris wheels.

This is Chicago. Do you really think it will not end up costing the taxpayers money somehow? I think it will cost us money in the long run.

Maybe. Or maybe it'll help funnel more outside money into the city.

I do not think too many more people are going to come to Chicago to ride a new Ferris wheel than the number that already might for the one we have now.

Well, I don't think it'll be a huge draw. It'll just be one more thing. Just like the London Eye. Still, I think these things help some in drawing tourists (who can be annoying, but spend money.)

I don't think that's entirely true. Alot of people will come down to ride it "atleast" once at some point, including Chicagoans & suburanites. The marketing campaign of a mega ferris wheel will draw in some tourists. Ferris wheels are still a part of American culture, albeit a bit cliche.

I won't. not only because i'm terrified of heights, but also because I've never been to navy pier because i don't want to deal with the people that i have to deal with at work on the weekend anymore than i have to. heh.
