Chicago has a tight population density (and all the stress that goes with it) and cruddy winters just like east coast cities. Chicago has bit lower cost of living, but also lower income levels relative to the east coast. But people in New York don't have that heavy chip on their shoulder like Chicago does. Chicago has a higher crime rate and a worse job market. Chicago would not be as stressful as Detroit though.

Yeah Chicago beats Detroit!

If you really want to see a pervasive "chip on the shoulder" mentality, go to Cleveland.

I think its really simple, the higher the population and/or density, the more stressful a city is, enough said. Forbes puts these worthless surveys out every week.

Default Chicago most stressful city???

HA HA. The people over at Forbes are at it again. Chicago has earned yet another award that Daley can put up next to his big poster of his buddy Toddy Taxin Stroger. Most stressful city to live in! LOL!

So true! I discount Forbes' lists after they said Raleigh was the best place to live. Forbes' lists seem to favor smaller cities in the South. I detested living in the Raleigh area! There were too many rednecks and it was boring compared to Chicago's energy. If you love truly metropolitan areas, Forbes' lists are not for you.

Chicago is a lot cheaper than NYC. And I find Chicago people more down-to-earth than Manhattan-ites. I love Manhattan and its people too but Chicago is more liveable and relaxed.

I've lived here for 15-16 years and while I do find it stressful I don't know that I would say it is the MOST stressful city?
I can attest that at least driving through Chicago's downtown is about 1000 times more aggravating that driving right through midtown Manhattan and it is 100% the city's fault. They purposely have the signals timed so that you get stopped by nearly every light that way it entices you to run the red light as the one ahead of it is green that way they can snap a picture of your car and mail you a ticket.
