One of the oldest houses in Chicago, off of 55th. On a side street near Michigan I think, heading south. Near the old huge bakery - Schultz?. Anyone know the name/location? It's on the internet somewhere, found it once, can't find it again. Actually drove by it several years ago, a far cry from the original picture, but still there. Been racking my brain(s), can't remember the name. The photo on the internet shows it as standing alone on about 15-20 acres. Now of course, surrounded by houses. 1860's, 1870's, Italianate maybe? Thanks.

I suspect not. Most of the old buildings near 55th and Michigan are of early 1900's vintage, sorta James Farrell-ish, if you will. He lived near 58th and Michigan.

Thanks Manigault for the reply. Yeah, mostly they are 1900's, which makes this house so unusual. You have to look at it hard, but you can see beyond the added porch and various other additions to what it once was. Truly, a gem. There were others gawking at it as I drove by the last time.

The oldest house in Chicago is the Clarke House Museum has a huge porch on the front. It is in the Prairie Avenue District probably not the one you are thinking of though.

Yes, some of the frame houses. However, there are few frame houses around Garfield and Michigan. I may be wrong on this and things could have changed -- I haven't been around there since yesterday.

I checked this a.m.; that area is mainly old brick apartment buildings. There was one old house between State and the Dan Ryan around 59th st which was listed as a threatened historical building but its no where near the oldest in the city. The city lists 5611 Perry as having been constructed in the 1800's.

Yeah!! Found The House
This was bothering me!! The house is quite magnificent, just squint your eyes a little!
John Raber House 5760 S. Lafayette. Built pre 1870's, on 6 acres way out in the boonies. LOL
The house looked as pictured in the link when I drove past it some years ago. Bleak, sad, a shell of its former greatness. The inside - who knows, a mess I'm sure. Worth a ride by imho.
