I also will be moving to Chicago this summer, with my boyfriend. We currently live in Uptown Minneapolis and love it! We want to live somewhere similar in Chicago, in the $1000-$1200 range- someplace active, fun, and fairly safe. I will be attending a Ph.D. program and most likely will be coming home late some nights, and also will want to be able to go for a run in the mornings with my dog. We love the Lakeview/Lincoln Park area, and have heard great things about Wicker Park and Bucktown.

For the dog thing, go with the Lincoln park/Lakeview.

I don't know the prices there though.

It would be helpful to know what school you will be attending for your graduate degree.

There's lots of dogs in WP/B-town and three dog parks -- it's a great place to be a dog owner.

Would agree that we need to know where you're going to school to make the best suggestions.

Thanks for the advice! I am going to be going to UIC- but I don't want to live right by campus, as I think that I will be there all the time and will get sick of it! I want a place I can go home to and "get away", if you know what I mean.

What's the primary difference between the Wicker Park/Bucktown area and Lakeview/Lincoln Park (not geographically, but type of people living, feel, etc.) ?

Eh, I'd just rather have a long strip such as the lakefront.

I forget where I heard it from, but does Lincoln Park have a little bit of a high sexual assault/rape rate compared to the rest of the city?

Safe for me means that I can walk around pretty much any time of day and not worry about a crime being committed against me/in my home/close to me. However, other posters might think of safe as "no murders near home" or "I can walk around during the day, but at night I drive places." Safety is VERY subjective.

Even in the most expensive neighborhood in the city, the Gold Coast, you are not guaranteed safety 100%. Do I usually worry when I am visiting there? No, but I am street smart about the panhandlers and I am also a 6'2'' 240 pound man, so I'm not the usual target.

Generally, safe neighborhoods in my opinion on the North Side are Gold Coast, Lincoln Park, Old Town, Lakeview, and Roscoe Village. I haven't spent enough time in Wicker Park/Bucktown to quantify that area.

On the South Side, I know the Beverly and Hyde Park areas are generally safe and are in high demand (Beverly for sure, not so sure about HP, very little exposure there).

What are you looking to spend? If money is no object, Gold Coast. But please keep in mind that even in the safest neighborhoods, things happen. Recently, in my neighborhood, which is adjacent to Boystown, there have been several Gay Bashings in the area of Roscoe and Halsted. It is generally considered to be a safe area, an area I walk around both in the day and the night, but this was a big wakeup call to me and my friends that just because you are in the "Gayborhood", doesn't mean you are safe. You better believe that the next time I walked home from that area, I was looking over my shoulder and making sure I was aware of my surroundings.

I have lived in this city since March of 2008 and have had a crime-free existence. I have walked home sober and blackout drunk at all hours of the day and been fine.

I hope this was of some help for you!

Very good points, to me feeling safe means not being scared to walk around at all times of the day...and at night. I do know petty crime can happen any and everywhere..so im not talking about a pristine crime free place...just the safest in the city

You have been a great help, trust me! My range is around 0-850 for a 1 bedroom.

It is pretty inevitable that your girlfriend is going to be overwhelmed in Chicago. It takes a while to get used to the city (when I first moved here, I used to carry a "cheat sheet" with me to know that Howard meant North on the Red Line and 95th/Dan Ryan meant South). Make sure you allow some time to explore the city before you start working/school, since life is pretty fast-paced here compared to a small town of 10,000.
Yeah I mean shes been to St. Louis a couple of times and Memphis a little bit, she just hasn't lived anywhere else. Yeah I already took her to visit over christmas(she LOVES the heat...so her thinkin the place was still nice in winter gave me the thumbs up!). I know she is going to be over-whelmed but I think shes prepared for that.

THanks so much for all the advice.
