Much has been said about how well rounded the Chicagoland's economy is.
In that way it's similar to it's fellow big 3 behemoths NYC and LA, but despite diversification many cities have one prominient industry that they are renowned for or that differentiates them from other cities

NYC: Finance/Fashion
LA: Entertainment
Houston: Oil/Energy
Detroit: Manufacturing
Boston: Education/Research
San Fran/San Jose: High Tech

Is there anything Chicago has that's comparable?

Chicago used to be manufacturing but now it is a mixture of many things. At the top of the list I would say legal because Chicago probably has more law firms and more lawyers per capita than any other city- even New York I would think. It also has 5 law schools and, if UIC builds a Chicago school, it will be 6. That is more than most states have,

Its probably better that we don't have one prominent industry the economy revolved around. It is a huge center for all kinds of business and that's a good thing.

All of those things, just not totally focused on one.
This is where Chicago is so, so strong.
