The MEtra Electric and express busses (2 and 6 I think) from downtown are equally safe. The red line is less safe. That is really it.

Your public transit option is Metra to downtown, then either the Jeffrey or Metra Electric from the east end of the loop down to Hyde Park. It will take a long time. Go to the CTA website and Metra website to see what kind of service there is at the end of your evening classes.

Driving is probably a better option. Maybe you can carpool. I would suggest coming in on the KEnnedy then cutting over to LSD and going south to Hyde Park. Don't know what campus parking situations there is ,though.

Oh, and green line also, though it is so slow I never take it. THe green line is about the same category as the red line, perhaps a bit less safe if I had to rank it. Both typically require a short bus transfer, though you could walk the green line depenending on where you are going in HP. Not the safest walk, though.

There's a CTA express bus (#192) which shuttles between Ogilvie and Union Station and University of Chicago Hospital.

It looks like the Jeffrey express #14 actually picks up near Ogilvy too.

Just noticed that you said "evening" classes. So the 192 won't work since its set up for daytime commuters.

The #14 doesn't stop in Hyde Park. The best bet for the OP is probably driving, although taking the Metra Electric might work but would require a transfer from Ogilvie or Union Station to east Loop to catch the ME.
