This new journalistic effort is dedicated to the Logan Square, Wicker Park, and Humboldt Park communities focusing on crime, safety, and CAPS Issues. The blog features links to law enforcement agencies, audio feeds to the 14th District Police Radio Operations and Chicago Fire Department Main Radio Operations.

The newest post deals with what is starting to happen in the wake of CAPS shake-up's taking CAPS personnel out of the office and leaving only two officers with a Sergeant in the office.

Reports on crime and community safety threats are coming soon.

Thanks, nice resource.

One note of clarification, some of Avondale is 14th District as well. Since we're a bona fide community area it would help us publicize/stay connected if we could be included by name.

I'm covering all of the 14th district, but because there is already a crime blotter covering Avondale by name, I didn't want to cause confusion or double the effort. Avondale is indeed part of my coverage though.

Doesn't he stick to a somewhat limited area around his home? He includes Logan Square by name in his, so there's bound to be a bit of double-coverage.

Anyhoo, I think yours looks more informational, that's all. Count me as a supporter for inclusion if you reconsider.

Thank you, it's a really important service.

I have some new neighbors who are among those who are totally gun-shy about calling the police, I try to explain that calling 911 doesn't mean someone else suffering a heart attack/armed burglar is getting a busy signal, etc.!

That makes me wonder if they may have had a bad experience before. They may be afraid of being found out by those who have no real need to know, and staying anonymous is a precious gift to us citizens in the most sensitive situations. Invite them to a CAPS meeting! Maybe getting to know their other neighbors and Police may help warm them up to how things work here.

I think it's just a confusion about 311 vs 911. A lot of people seem to think non-emergency stuff goes to 311, but my understanding is anything you see happening in real time goes to 911. The call center folks prioritize according to the severity of the problem.

Our CAPS rep is great, she sends out email updates regularly, me & her tagteam on graffiti blaster requests (esp gang ones, they're down to the point where now it's surprising to see them, when it used to be strange not to see them) so I'm definitely trying to loop the new folks in -

Yeah, I can see that too. Real time reporting: call 911!

If it's already happened, or it's not a life threatening situation requiring an immediate response, call 311. All city service requests go to 311 for things like graffiti blasters, human services concerns that are not yet an emergency, housing complaints such as abandoned buildings / code violations, etc.
