Vanity Fair is a location in Bunyan’s allegory “Pilgrim’s Progress” (and also the title of an 1850 Novel by Thackeray). Solomon also reflected on the pursuits of this life as “vanity.” The term ‘Vanity Fair’ has become a synonym for a vain, ostentatious lifestyle obsessed with frivolous, idle amusement and inevitably worthless things.
IMO, a vivid image of a modern day ‘Vanity Fair’ was seen in both the Opening and Closing Olympic Ceremonies, neither of which had anything to do with the Olympics, Athletics or an International sports competition. Similarly, movies, TV, advertizing, entertainment, big-dollar sports (all forms of media) and in a sense, politics and social networks …all seem intent on replacing anything substantive or meaningful – with flamboyant sound bytes and digitally altered images.
Meanwhile, family values, morality, truth, honesty, integrity, faith and all things decent are being marginalized or shouted-down by an increasingly belligerent pagan society. It seems that all we are missing is an emperor and some gladiator events to complete the transition.
Is this assessment ‘over-the-top,’ or ‘uncomfortably close’ to your view of today's society?
Your observation is right on. we as a society are due for a reality check. When it hits it will be bad. the depression of the 30's will be a joke. God has a way of making people humble.
