See the words of Christ in John 15:[1] I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
[2] Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
[3] Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
[4] Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
[5] I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. [6] If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
[7] If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
[8] Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
[9] As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
[10] If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
You are certainly right that we cannot be obedient to Christ unless we have the Spirit of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus said in Luke 16:[10] So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.
We have nothing of which we can boast, if the Spirit is dong the work in and through us.

Without understanding the context of verse 2 it will always contradict verse 5. The context of verse 2 is that God helps the believer to produce fruit, not discard or throw away as the translation makes it seem. God does not cut off believers in Christ because of lack of outward manifestations of their faith. That is not His nature. A small grape and a large grape are both picked and eaten. The large grape has more fruit but they are still both grapes.

These are the red letter words of Jesus, which speak for themselves.
Actually, it does. The point being that the basis for actions is changed and it is now no longer a matter of guidance by "law," it is a matter of guidance by love. We are allowed to murder anyone we can murder in love or steal as an act of love toward the person from whom we steal. Granted that is not going to happen, but the reason for that fulfills the purpose of the Law and that is the point. "The letter kills, but the spirit gives life."
This is a great thread. It's so wonderful to see my brothers and sisters studying the scriptures together! That's what a real church does. It's not a building, it's the Body coming together and working together to keep each other on the narrow path. I'm so very honored to see the teamwork here!
Lord, in the precious Name of Jesus, I ask special provision and guidance for those working to further the Kingdom. We know that we can do nothing good without you, and I ask that You cover this group of people. Please give them grace, knowledge and wisdom in every situation. Lord, we know the enemy is waiting to try to rip us up, and we know you have every question answered. Please give us strength to endure the attacks, grace to love each other as well as the lost and the peace that surpasses all understanding. Lord, we ask you to please let us reach "your sheep" which have not yet, heard your voice. We know that time is not only short, it's gone. Lord, give us what it takes to reach the lost. In Jesus Name, Amen
Jesus said in Matt. ch. 6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled [with the Holy Spirit, in my opinion.] Also in the same chapter, [blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.]
See also in Heb. 12:[14] Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
So we must be pure and holy to see the kingdom of God.
