What Father Wylie is referring to is not the lack of statues or church appearance but the Traditional Latin Mass not being accepted though many Catholics like it and want it. Since Holy Innocents re-instituted the Traditional Latin Mass their numbers have increased, yet they're still slated for closure.

The website traditionalmass.org has a page comparing the old mass with the new mass Old Mass vs. New Mass | Traditional Latin Mass Resources

While I am no expert on the subject of Catholic inner workings, it is quite apparent many Catholics place Vatican II reforms squarely as the cause of what Ralph Martin of Sacred Heart Major Seminary calls a crisis in his paper The Post-Christendom Sacramental Crisis:The Wisdom of Thomas Aquinas He cites a combination of fewer new Catholics being added by evangelization, fewer existing Catholics observing and participating in the Sacraments, and youth not being taught the basics, as main contributors to the crisis.

Thanks to your friendship to the priest you have a handle on Catholicism. Most Catholics know little about Catholicism because it is not simple. I am one of those that is mostly a cultural Catholic, but have profound admiration for those that are truly men and women of God.

Just as well. It would be bad enough for them to have to deal with the giant, god-like statue of Lincoln, but what would they do when they read the words carved on the wall above the statue:

IN THIS TEMPLE
AS IN THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE
FOR WHOM HE SAVED THE UNION
THE MEMORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN
IS ENSHRINED FOREVER

Temple??? Temple??????? It's pagan worship, and even worse than the statue of the Blessed Mother on your Italian neighbor's lawn! Flee! Flee for your lives from the graven image!!! Aiiiieeeeeeeee!!!!
