there will always be error and confusion in this world BUT as far as this particular discussion goes, the Catholic Church does NOT teach or promote that merely repeating words of any kind (formal or extempore) without sincere thought or good intent is indeed "vain" and "worthless". as always, "out of the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks" and it is from that place that valid and worthy prayer proceeds to God through Christ in the Holy Spirit.
FWIW, Jesus as an observant Jew would likely have observed traditional prayers repeated on a regular basis for personal prayer and in the synagogue (or the temple for that matter) at Shabbat and the other holidays including the "Shema Israel"---the profession of faith---"hear, oh Isreal, the Lord, the Lord is one!!!"
