My parents spanked us kids few a far between , but the threat to be good was always there , even though my parents went to church they never even knew the Lord until , us kids left the nest ..... Still they never used a belt or rod but a open hand ..... Looking back I don`t recall any resentment to my parents ...... It was a different culture when the teacher at school would use a strap belt on the hand and some would use a wood rod or a 3 foot ruler to hit the kids , and probably got more resentment from the kids ........
Proverbs 13:24 (NKJV)
24 He who spares his rod hates his son,
But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.
What does this verse mean to you? Ive seen other examples as well along the same lines. Proverbs 10:13(NKJV)
13 Wisdom is found on the lips of him who has understanding,
But a rod is for the back of him who is devoid of understanding.
Proverbs 22:15(NKJV)
15 Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child;
The rod of correction will drive it far from him.
Proverbs 23:13New King James Version (NKJV)
13 Do not withhold correction from a child,
For if you beat him with a rod, he will not die.
Proverbs 29:15(KJV)
15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.
The word rod indicates a thin stick or switch that can be used to give a small amount of physical pain with no lasting physical injury.
Even though I would get a whipping if I was bad growing up, I personally dont believe in beating children with a belt. Maybe a pop or 2 on the behind, but belt whippings just reminds me of slavery of someone getting whipped and being quoted the bible the same time as well.
I do agree in discipline of a child to teach them lessons and time out is nonsense and doesnt work, but it seems like scriptures encourages the beating of children when you see the word rod in many verses and many Ive known get overjoyed to quote that verse to beat their children when they are bad.
I know many focus on the rod and the beating, but the goal is discipline and healthy boundaries for the child.
There absolutely be no injury, and no anger from the parent (or at best managed anger). And use one specific "rod" that the kid can identify.
But if you love your child, there has to be discipline.
Wow, you're just a beacon of wonderful encouragement.
Somewhat true here. First you should get the "that's a bad way," THEN the "you really ought to look into conflict resolution techniques for all aspects of relating to children."
The term "rod" in these contexts refer to a shepherd's rod, which was used to gently guide sheep and keep them with the others. It was not used to beat the sheep or leave them bruised and sore.
It is unfortunate that too many "devout" parents have interpreted it as an excuse to use a wooden spoon or stick to beat their children - even babies (look up "blanket training" if you want to hear about some heartbreaking discipline methods)- and leave bruises and sore butts. They are teaching their children to be terrified of them and to just obey out of fearnot to learn anything.
I always interpreted "Spare the rod, and SPOIL the child" as a plea to spare the rod, not an excuse to use it.
Parents are Shepherds who guide their small flock:
It's a misconception to believe that you, as a Parent rule the nest through fear of punishment. Nowhere in the Bible does it actually say, "Pick up a stick and beat your child into submission."
Abusive parents create an abusive/punitive image of God. It's a cycle of abuse.
It's why sadists and weak men are drawn to fundamentalism and its raging, righteous god-thing.
They lack the moral fibre necessary to build character -- so they assume it via the writings of anonymous bronze-age men deemed godly-ish by Constantinople at the urging of his Mom.
It is documented that the groups in US society which use physical punishment the most as a means of discipline is the group which has the highest crime rate and incarceration rate! (This is not a surprise to anyone not holding an agenda). Violence begets violence. Duh.
The bible is an awful moral guide. It is sexist, homophobic, mentions slavery without condemnation. Doesn't tell one how to properly treat animals or the environment of Earth. There is an angry God that condemns people forever, destroys cities out of jealously and other violence. Its appalling backward nonsense.
The universal declaration of human rights already is a more perfect document and more enlightened than the bible - that's just embarrassing for someone who holds up the bible as some ultimate moral law. Of course its not popular because it doesn't promise the glittery prize of "everlasting life!" to those that follow the rules. It just says - this is how each person should be treated. That doesn't appeal to venal, narcissistic humans who want a prize - hence the popularity of morally bankrupt ideologies like Christianity and Islam.
It means a good parent teaches their kids right from wrong. It may mean corporal punishment like spanking, or it may mean simply teaching a kid how to live.
