Here's the story. A family of ours came to one of the elders and was requesting help financially (or if the Church could help them) to keep their power on at home. They fell into some hard times (like we ALL have) and was asking for help. This elder told them no, and continued to insult them more by saying there poor because they can't manage there money and quite frankly not worthy of the help. I was floored when I heard this!
What I need from you, my Christian warriors is help finding any and all verses in the bible about helping our fellow brother/people in general. Anything would help. Links to other interesting websites about this would be great as well. I'm also interested on your opinion on how to approach this elder. I'm full hot on this deal so I'm praying for sound peace of mind. Any advice or thoughts are welcome

I too was once offended when a church official refused to help someone..but I didnt know the whole story, the church had already been helping individual for a few months prior to this event. Maybe theres more here than meets the eye..and of course maybe theres not. I have no idea what kind of church you attend,,but i have seen a "love offering" be taken up to help a family in need before. If it were me, I would talk to your pastor about it, calmly and in private before I said anything to anyone else at church or to the elder. IMHO of course.

If it's on your heart, find out more, go to the one in need, if you feel that its appropriate raise money for them.
We have had many instances of people going from church to church begging for money and receiving it. Some of the churches call the others in the area to give them the heads up. I guess it gets old after awhile.
Junos, maybe I'm just naive, but if you really feel they are in need, I'd approach some people in my church and ask if they'd be willing to chip in with you and help this family out. Unfortunately, we have become so cautious because of scammers that people who are really suffering aren't getting any relief.
IMHO just because someone is an elder in a church doesn't mean they are a good person. There are a lot of wolves in sheep's clothing out there.

Didn't Jesus once said that if you refused to help someone in need, you are also refusing to help Jesus himself?
That you're unwilling to do Jesus' work?

Yes Tricky He did say that but you don't believe in Him so why are you here in this earnest discussion among believing Christians. Go on over to Linesplein and have a pipe and chill.
Thanks for the replies all. Some of us that are friends helped this family out. I'm just disappointed that the church did nothing to help them. I'll be bringing this up at the next meeting I'm sure. (In a polite and kind way of course)

I believe in Jesus' philosophy, I just don't believe in Christ.
Or that Jesus is God.
