As they did this, they became more and more controlling, going so far as to warn and threaten our congregation that if any of us left, we would be cursed because of breaking our vow before God.

Eventually over half of the congregation left of their own accord. Instead of leaving, I stayed but began to raise questions. For whatever reason, the church printed up a "reaffirmation" paper reaffirming our vows that I felt uncomfortable signing.
I was then immediately excommunicated from the church, and then shunned with no questions asked.

The main concern that I have now is the vow that I had originally taken before God, to the church. I do not want to live my life in offense to God.
They are making the same errors the Catholic Church did in medieval times.

I know that God takes vows very seriously regardless of our understanding. In light of this, your replies have been very helpful.
Thanks again
God does take Vows very seriously and in fact His son said let your yes mean yes and your no, no.

My question is not addressed at the vow issue, rather what teaching did you disagree with? Was it a teaching or the control that is the main issue. Remember even the 1st century church had excommunication and shunning as a proper practice.
