First of all, I'll come right out and say I did not vote for Barack Obama. The reasons boiled down to his stance on abortion, and the fact that I do not think the mandatory redistribution of wealth is a good thing.
That said...
As a Christian, I'm called to respect our governing authorities (Romans 13), and I've also found that there are usually good things even where we maybe don't want to see them - and we should focus on those things (Philippians 4:8-9).
So...
What are some of the things you LIKE about President Barack Obama? I'll start:
1. I like the fact seems to genuinely love his wife and daughters - and does appear to be a very good husband and dad.
2. I like the fact that he provides a positive role model for blacks - particularly young black men - evidencing the fact that hard work, education and good decisions can do a LOT for you.
What do you (especially Christians) LIKE about President Obama?
*Please don't make this into some sort of political rant or debate! I want this to be a thread where (especially) Christians can look at, and talk about, some good things.
I am not trying to be negative just want to set the record straight but you said, he is a good role model for blacks, showing hard work etc.....As a black man I just can't let it go. I appreciate where you are coming from but we have had tons of black men and women who have paved the way, setting an example for us AND OBAMA. It's just that he has been given more notoriety.

You're right about there being MANY good black male role models. In fact, there are probably many who are BETTER than Obama.
But this is different. And it'll be interesting to see how it all plays out.

I like him. He's charismatic. I'll choose to ignore the liberal population who wet their pants on him.
But I have reservations about him being a christian. That he might be a closet muslim cannot be ruled out. But it's not wrong if he were muslim. Just that deception in public life is not much appreciated.
I like the fact that he wants us as a nation to return to our values of hard work, and not to depend on plastic to live our lives. I agree with him when he says it's the American household that got us in this mess more than Wall St.

I am called to respect the office and will not seek to undermine it by illegal means. But I don't know that I like a whole lot about him. Sorry...but I think his life is one big photo op.
So he isn't a role model because there were earlier role models? That makes zero sense.
Obama is a role model not just for blacks (I dare not speak on the black issue as fundie seems to have that whole population of America spoken for) but he is also a role model and an example for everyone with respect to how far this country has come with respect to "race" and how painfully far away we are in terms of where we should be. I'm not talking about from a legal perspective.. I'm talking about from a personal perspective.
Obama wasn't elected because he was black.. (some people on this very board have even wondered if he is black.. hell some still wonder if he is American.. both of those groups wondering those items ran straight past stupidville and are quietly resting in ignoranceville).
The magnitude of Obama's election will have nothing to do with whether or not he is a great leader or not. However, from a historical perspective its a big friggin' deal. There are some black people (who are old enough) who know doubt remember their parents having to jump through hoops to vote and probably even wondered if their vote counted. This is a big deal.. huge..
Now for Obama as the President.. time will tell. He was dealt the equivalent of a 7-2 off suit in Texas Hold em'. While he thought he would be focusing on Iraq he is now having to focus on a global financial problem (one that I personally believe will get worse before it gets better). I appreciate the fact that he doesn't lose his cool. He is less emotional. I don't want emotion creeping into decisions. Emotion clouds decisiveness.
Beyond the political stuff.. he seems like a normal guy.. I like that. He has a sense of whats right.. and whats wrong.
I don't agree with him on everything politically (I voted for him) but I get the sense that he does what he feels is right for the country.
I like how his demeanor and attitude of collaboration was a guiding force in bringing the nations of the G-20 summit together to respect every nation's perspective and come to a consensus that served the interests of all.
Like it or not, the way the U.S. approaches the world determines a great deal. Bush always came wanting to force his terms on others and they naturally pushed back like anyone would when confronted with someone telling them what to think and do.
