Actually, on this model it's probably just a loose valve cover bolt, or at worst a bad valve cover gasket. Been there, done that.

But I wouldn't recommend someone with no mechanical experience or ability buy it hoping that that's all it is.

Here is the rule of thumb on a $500 car or any cheap used car. Add up how much it would cost to fix everything on the car where it will have ZERO problems, or atleast problems you can live with like a broken power mirror, or fading paint, then if it is more than the car would be worth if it got total in a wreck or natural disaster, that is the stopping point on how much to put into it

If the car is worth like $1500-3000 and that is all you would get if it were totaled, don't spend anything that will go over that value since it you will never get it back.

Folks, for those of you who wish to be helpful but aren't aware, this person has started 8+ threads on sub $800 cars, basically asking whether or not they are a good buy and in each case they were train wrecks of some sort. He doesn't appear very knowledgeable and is not the kind of person who looks to do their own repairs which means that almost every car he will run across in that price range will be a bad buy.

Save this person some time and respond with a nice solid capital NO in every thread they make on the same general topic.

It may be time to just stinking ban the guy until he understands reality. $500 doesn't even buy the bones for a project car these days. I have clicked on my last thread containing the phrase "$500" .

The link in the OP is dead now.

This posting has been deleted by its author.

(The title on the listings page will be removed in just a few minutes.)

S/he has posted 7 or 8 posts about $500 cars and such, has not come back to answer questions; just keeps posting over and over about $500 SE MI - OH rustbuckets on craigslist.
I wonder if the OP is in the business of selling $500 craigslist rustbuckets and is using CD as a way to bump sales? Because any other answer strains credulity.

This guy is not only annoying, he is an idiot. I really think he is a very bored 12 year old who is playing the games kids used to play, calling up people and asking them if they had Prince Albert in a can, except now he has the internet to use.

What a jerk.

You are getting some good advice. The Mitsubishi version of the Stratus should be avoided. Why Dodge swicthed the name from Avenger to Stratus is beyond me, as the Stratus name was already used on a 4 door mid size car.

I drove these cars when they were new, but they do not age very well and are difficult to repair.
