Tom Mutchler said I bought a new test truck, and there was much rejoicing. Celebration for the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, the first half-ton diesel truck in more than 25 years, goes far beyond the yard work needs of the Consumer Reports auto test staff.

Let's see. $50,000, gets 25mpg which costs about the gas version taking into account diesel premium. And 1,233 pound payload? What is this?

Ouch esp. when the 2500/3500 both have the long term reliability and resale factor of having a Cummins diesel for the same price or less then a first year model 1500 with the Fiat built 3.0 Ecodiesel.

It is the got to have it first will pay over 15-20% over MSRP to have it Retro 2005 Mustang GT syndrome all over again

I priced one out on the dodge website for 37k MSRP that was a quad cab 4x4. Maybe there is a possibility of something like that selling for around 31-32k? That's a more reasonable price .

As typical of Consumer reports, this is a mostly BS article especially with buyers in line to get one. Our local dealer has over 70 Eco Diesels in stock and ready to go.....and no buyers, even with a 5 grand discount. The hard one to get here is still the Hemi like you want it. They're either the top of the line or a 4x4. Mid trim levels sell best here.

For a truck, this is the killer:
Quote:
Our truck’s 1,233 pound payload rating is pretty modest. With its 3.55 rear axle ratio, the truck can tow 7,750 pounds. Say you tow a 6,500-pound camper; it will probably have 650 pounds of tongue weight, leaving you with less than 600 pounds of capacity for your kids and stuff in the truck.
With a payload capacity that low you're buying the truck pretty much for looks, because you're not going to be hauling much with it.

Then again, that doesn't seem to bother many people. I see plenty of beefy modded-out trucks with pristine painted beds that have likely never hauled anything or been offroad.
