Hi guys! I might be applying for a few jobs in the Cincy metro, and I'd like to live in SE Indiana so I can eventually get in-state tuition at IU. I notice that the population isn't very large in the IN counties in the metro, so I'd like to ask...is it a bad area? It doesn't seem -too- far away as 275 goes through the area. Ftr, I'm a liberal gay male...but I don't mind living in somewhat (not exceptionally) conservative areas (I live just south of Omaha, NE now).

Any advice would be great. Thanks!

The IN counties in the metro Cincy area, are they safe? About as safe as farmland can get, since they are mostly rural. Other than the casino in Lawrenceburg, and a couple of others further down the river, you are talking a very rural atmosphere, thus the low population density.

Can't speak for lifestyle acceptance, but otherwise if you can stand the commute would be a good place to live.

No, SE Indiana isn't a bad area at all. It's safe...you RARELY ever hear of any kind of crime going on there. Granted, it's not a hotbed of liberalism, and there isn't much, if any, of a gay community there. But I doubt you'd have any problems with being accepted by people there. So if being in a rural, basically conservative slower paced area doesn't bug you, then go for it. Depending on where you'll be working in the metro, the commute could be an issue, although generally speaking you'd be a half-hour from downtown Cincinnati.

SE indiana is quite far away. our outer belt loop highway is a model of trying-to-satisfy-all-people and is as a result incredibly large and encompasses many areas that are only marginally part of the cincinnati metro. meaning SE indiana is very rural and arguably barely a part of cincinnati. that doesn't mean it isn't nice though!

if you have a job on the west side, you might be able to make it work. but living in SE indiana and commuting to the east side would, in my opinion, be a torturous commute.

this part of the state has reciprocity agreements with some neighboring states allowing for mutual in-state tuition. i believe it extends into kentucky and tennessee, but i don't know about indiana. also, there are many nice schools in Ohio, both Miami in Oxford and Ohio University in Athens are fairly similar campus-wise to IU in Bloomington.

DS lives in Hamilton and works in Newport, KY. I believe he uses the 275/74 route most days to get to and from work. Not the shortest of drives each day, but he says it is quite doable. His previous job was in Eden Park. One advantage of going west a bit is that the major traffic issues seem to be more on the north and east sides. Of course this observation is from someone who lives in an area where the nearest city of more than 16,000 is about an hour away.

Thanks all, this is good to know! Hopefully I could find a house that would be decent in one of those places (Dearborn County looks nice, though I'm not excited about the giant plant in downtown Lawrenceburg)...

Downtown Lburg isnt terrible. Look into Greendale and Auroa. I would check out bright and Logan. Logan still has a rural feel to me but bright is a big subdivision. Top areas I would look into

1. Logan
2. Bright
3. Greendale
4. Sunman
5. Rising Sun

I grew up in Indiana my whole life. It isn't as bad as some of these Buckeyes would tell you!

Also not very many people care about your Relationship. You may get some looks from the older crowd but that is the same everywhere.
