It will be sometime before we can know the full extent of the benefits of Southwest moving into CVG. At present, one thing is certain - this city just received the most exciting and positive business news since GE moved one their five global headquarters to the Banks.

Here's hoping all of you can get JetBlue.

Interestingly, the article you cited above ( Southwest's CVG launch could have larger impacts for region ) became the Cincinnati Enquirer's front page feature print article entitled: "HOPES REST ON SOUTHWEST...Little downside envisioned as esteemed carrier enters market". As for myself, I discovered it to be a really decent, detailed read accompanied by several informative graphs.

Very good news.
BWI and MDW are two of SWA's hubs so it's logical to begin direct flights to and from CVG to these airports in the region. Passengers can, obviously, make connections at either of these two initial direct flight destinations.

In detail, this Cincinnati Enquirer article examines what attracted Southwest to CVG. As for myself, it was a really informative, enjoyable read...

How did CVG finally get Southwest?

SWA really doesn't have hubs because their flights are not designed for you to pass through to another destination when you get to places like BWI or Chicago Midway, where SWA bases more flights than CMH or CVG.

Southwest used to be significantly cheaper than other airlines. That's not the case anymore. I don't know if Southwest has gone way up or if the other carriers have gone down, but there are few cheap flying Bargains to be had anymore. It's a good airline, though.

In the 1980s, Southwest was a low-frills airline with very low fares. This was accomplished through operational efficiencies and among the lowest pay scale among the major carriers.

These days, Southwest is competitive with the other major airlines. They have among the HIGHEST pay scales as most of the legacy airlines have gone through bankruptcy to renege on the labor contracts that they signed with their employees. And since the legacy airlines have cut free services, Southwest offers a lot more - two free bags and no change fees which definitely have a great value.
