What can we credit your city for that people in this country or around the world just could not live without, thanks to your city? It can be an invention, an idea, a discovery, etc......just as long as it was originally 1.) developed in your city, AND it's a 2.) very important or iconic thing (but not an entire company like say, Target or Best Buy).

I'll start with Minneapolis/St. Paul (list 1-10 of the best, if you can):

Post-its (3M)
Scotch tape (3M)
Rollerblades
Wheaties (General Mills)
Pillsbury Doughboy (Pillsbury/General Mills)
Enclosed retail malls ("Southdale" was the 1st)
Tailgating (apparently.....at the old "Met" stadium)

That's all I can think of, and I'm sure some are subjective to opinions as well.

Well, a guy from NYC invented air conditioning, so I guess that's a great invention...

The Kellogg guy was born here too, so if you're eating breakfast cereal in an air conditioned room, like I was doing most of this past summer, you're welcome, although I had nothing to do with it, lol.

French Dip
The Tortilla Chip 1940
Fortune Cookie (1918) (disputed by SF)
The electric guitar
mickey mouse
the modern skateboard
Barbie
Hula Hoop
McDonalds
the Cheeseburger
the mars rover
stacked freeway exchange
the american burrito
space shuttle
GPS
some aspect or other of the internet that I don't understand (LA is one of the many cities that lays claim to being where the internet was "invented.." when we all know Al Gore is the one who deserves our thanks.)

...those are the ones I can think off the top of my head but I know there are more.

Here's some things that I know or can think of that got started in Seattle:

The modern coffee culture

The modern way of doing business, the PC, operating systems, etc (with Windows, whether you like MS or hate them) ... this one is debatable because the PC was really pioneered by Apple but their stupid licensing practices and Steve Jobs' maniacal desire to keep everything close stifled growth

The bionic lens: Bionic contact lens - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first large passenger jet with more composite in it than any other before it

I know Zymogenetics (recently bought out) pioneered protein-based retroviral disease treatments

The company which sequenced the human genome is here too.

A lot of video games are developed here.

Yeah, a lot of software, aerospace, and medical innovations are here. I'm sure there's more, but don't have the time to thoroughly research them all.

"In 1902, the first modern electrical air conditioning unit was invented by Willis Haviland Carrier in Buffalo, New York. After graduating from Cornell University, Carrier, a native of Angola, New York, found a job at the Buffalo Forge Company. While there, Carrier began experimentation with air conditioning as a way to solve an application problem for the Sackett-Wilhelms Lithographing and Publishing Company in Brooklyn, New York, and the first "air conditioner", designed and built in Buffalo by Carrier, began working on 17 July 1902."

Judging by his claim that his city beat out SF for the popularization of the fortune cookie, I'm guessing Los Angeles. Popularization is the key word here though, as the cookie was obviously invented in Asia..

Also he is wrong

Not to be picky, but the thread is about inventions/creations. I don't think your city invented the brick house or school. Or I could be reading this wrong...

Regardless, they are pretty important things in our society.
