The Boston metro is much larger with more variety in education, art, sports, food, entertainment, etc. Boston is also a port city with a much higher density. Boston also has international recognition and influence.
Richmond is much smaller, and has some nice city areas. It is pretty walkable, but offers much less and is much less known. Richmonds history is much more known for it's involvement in the Civil War, whereas, Bostons more well-known for its involvement in the Revolution.
I think both have great architecture and history, but Boston's just much larger.
