The stadium answer is fairly legit -- between Minneapolis and St. Paul there will be four new stadiums built within 15 years:

Xcel Center: St. Paul - Minnesota Wild (2002)
TCF Stadium: Minneapolis - Minnesota Gophers (2009)
Target Field: Minneapolois - Minnesota Twins (2010)
TBD: Minneapolis - Minnesota Vikings (2016)

The Vikings new domain won't be quite as excessive as the Cowboys Stadium, but it's north of $1 billion dollars and it'll certainly be state-of-the-art when it's built. On top of these, Target Center (Minnesota Timberwolves) recently received approval for a $100 million renovation, which will drastically alter the stadium and bring it up-do-date with the best stadiums in the league.

Why they decided to build all of these stadiums in such a short span is beyond me!

Not to mention the Twin Cities were smart enough to have all their stadiums centrally located and on the LRT lines. Rangers Ballpark and Cowboys Stadium are in Arlington which has no DART access. Which means people still have to drive and pay high parking fees to see a Rangers or Cowboys game live even though light rail is available. The stupidity of it all is comical.

1. Car culture is dominant in Texas, unlike in Minnesota.
2. Blame the "city" of Arlington for not creating its own transit authority or even accepting service from Dallas' DART or The T in Fort Worth.
3. Minneapolis and St. Paul are RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER. Dallas and Fort Worth are 30 miles apart with several suburbs in between them and (Super Bowl XLV should have been proof to the rest of the country) all of the cities within the Metroplex, especially Dallas and Fort Worth, don't really work too well with each other. Trust me on that one...

Then why build the ballpark in Arlington then? They were building the DART rail at the same time the ballpark was being built. Did anybody there have the sense to see how 25 to 30,000 people arriving 81 times a year would be good for Downtown Dallas? Why isn't the ballpark even on the line it the first place? They had another chance to build Cowboys Stadium in Fair Park but the spineless legislature laid down for Jerrah so he could charge people $75 to park in front of his palace. These are reasons why DART has low ridership and why Downtown Dallas is kind of pathetic compared to Downtown Mpls. Just short sighted stupidity. Then again, you guys were never really known for smart, long term thinking.

The Ballpark was finished in 1994 when there was NO real rail in the entire area at all. At the time, there was no guarantee of Dallas pushing out rail to other cities or if it would even be successful. You also have to keep in mind that the Rangers are the ONLY team in the Metroplex that have never been in Dallas. So it would be a bit wrong ripping them away from Tarrant County. Why not Downtown Fort Worth?

Cowboys Stadium on the other hand was built in Arlington because (then) Dallas Mayor Lara Miller basically kept the Cowboys out of Dallas County. Arlington just took them off their hands and Jerry accepted.

Again, car culture dominates most of the Sunbelt and I'm pretty sure both of the Twin Cities are more dense, therefore easier to gain more riders than Dallas or Fort Worth.

What does "you guys" mean? I don't make the decisions for any city in this area. What kind of smug, smart ass question is that?

What? That's not how it works. Why would Arlington, Irving, Fort Worth or any other city care about Downtown Dallas before themselves? And is it even a good thing to have these giant structures in the CBD's to begin with. You should come visit to know how everythings laid out. Jerry is a business person. I am sure he's in it for himself and not DART.

There's the winning answer!

A lot of times though, cities vie for the benefit of stadiums because that instantly puts them on the national map (sometimes even international map), so to his point I understand the question of why wasn't Dallas fighting tooth and nail for the Rangers to be in Dallas and not Arlington. I don't know anything about the history of that team or those cities, but I assume that was the kind of information he wanted.

I'm being a bit naive now but are the Rangers building a new stadium, or are we still talking about the old one?

Oh definitely NOT.

The Ballpark isn't even 20 years old yet and it's not goin' anywhere anytime soon. Yes, Arlington is the least "urban" city in Texas (which is saying something) but it's in the middle of the Metroplex and few people complain about the location. It would be better if someone developed around it as originally planned, especially since Cowboys is just right down the street, but as far as them moving or building a new stadium, it ain't happening. Especially around downtown Dallas.

Had Mark Cuban bought the team, however (thank God he didn't), we might be discussing that right now.

Which city is ahead or will have the better future when comes to having a successful light rail system. I don't live in either city so may be some of you have the answer. Anyone used both systems? How are the connections to both airports? ridership?
