How do they differ, which feels like it has the biggest party going on, which has the most diverse options, which is exxiest and which do you prefer? Where are the hotspots in each city?

South Beach to me though it's more seasonal with much less a scene in summer than say October through April. Check out the following clubs:

B.E.D. B.E.D. | MIAMI
1020 @ The Clevelander South Beach Nightlife - South Beach Clubs - 1020 music lounge - Dancing in South Beach, Florida, FL
LIV Fontainebleau : Liv (http://www.fontainebleau.com/web/bars__nightlife/liv/ - broken link)

The L.A. scene is pretty early, with last calls that aren't as late as other cities - I think mostly because its a car-centric city and they don't want people driving home drunk. There are definitely clubbing hotspots--Hollywood especially--but as I understand it there are good places to party all over the metro since the population is spread out. L.A. also has the advantage of having warm weather year-round, so people aren't afraid to go out and party in the winter (although, I guess in this particular company only New York would suffer that).

But it is a glamorous scene - it's where Hollywood parties after all.

I would have to say New York.
New York is by far much larger than Miami & LA and therefore there is more variety. You have the ultra-chic places where some celebrities won't even get in and then you have the grungy williamsburg bar with some indie band. None of the others have such a large spectrum of nightlife - maybe LA.

IMO in order from best to worse based on variety:
NYC
Miami
Vegas
LA

For just the party scene
Miami
NYC
Vegas
LA

New York city has everything you can think of.
Miami has world famous night clubs, has a decent amount of bars too and a few districts to go to. Miami's nightlife is the best for people looking for the Ibiza/Barcelona type all night dancing nightclub type of thing. Nightlife gets going around 1am ends around 6am.

Vegas: Vegas is very touristy and very American. Its good but had no real identity.

LA: LA is very spread out, clubs are fun but close WAY too early!

I would rank New York as number one followed by Vegas, Miami and Los Angeles in that order.

If NYC had slots then it'll be number 1.

But Vegas, you have everything there, and drugs & prostitution is practically legal there.

I'd put Vegas at number 1. The city was built for the sole purpose of nightlife.
