I love the Bay Area and all but these Bay Area cities versus other cities threads have to be stopped, at least for this week man. There's just so many of them already done and being conversed.
Anyways, Oakland for me, its in the Bay Area and it actually has some nice neighborhoods, unlike what most people on City-Data like to believe. Never been to Kansas City before, but want to see it one day eventually, so I'll be paying attention to this thread either way.

Most of the bay area threads - the San Jose ones - are troll threads anyway so this is an honest thread for a change.
I lived in Kansas City for over a decade and currently live in Sacramento but spend quite a bit of time in Oakland. In my opinion, they are both great towns. KC tends to be more conservative, has worse weather and lacks the scenic beauty of the Oakland area. However, the Oakland has more crime, gangs and is generally more expensive. Both have great restaurants, cultural attractions and pro sports teams. You can't dismiss the benefit of having SF just over the bridge though. In KC, the nearest "city" is more than 3 hours away (Des Moines).
KC over Sacramento without a question, but KC vs Oakland is pretty much a toss up based on what is important to you.
Obviously no one lives in the bay and has been to Oak because it sucks there...KC 4 me...
