New Orleans could have been the New York of the South. It’s near the mouth of the Mississippi just New York is at the mouth of the Erie Canal/Hudson. In the 19th century much of the output of the entire Midwest had to pass though either New York or New Orleans.

Climate was a major drawback. New Orleans is extremely uncomfortable without air conditioning and waterborne diseases were a severe problem in the 19th century. The city couldn't attract a population like New York. Once technology overcame these issues, other cities took over.

Great cities are made through the actions of people. Geography helps, but it’s not enough by itself. The people of New Orleans never really wanted to be a great commercial city. They wanted to preserve their agrarian and French/Spanish culture.

I could see it, but as of modern times? No.

However, it was known for immigration, ports, culture, and density amongst other things. I understand the New Orleans and NYC comparison more than the Atlanta comparison though.

Thats my stand. Currently, no not really but they have similarities. And I don't understand the ATL-NYC relation, if that's the case might as well say Houston and Dallas too.

The term came to be for a couple of reasons:

1. As far as I can tell, it was used in a NY newspaper piece back in the late 19th century as a way of noting the correlation to how Atlanta annexed pre-existing cities into the city proper similar to how NYC annexed the other boroughs into NYC which was occurring at the same time and was pretty uncommon for the time.

2. The thin correlation that the official nickname of New York is the Empire State and the official nickname of Georgia is the Empire State of the South. NYC is New York largest city, Atlanta is Georgia's largest city.

3. The insistence of late 19th century boosters who wanted people to ignore Atlanta's Civil War role and refocus it in parallel with America's largest most prosperous city.

4. The general bravado of the residents of both cities. Both cities rarely give an eff in real life what people think about them and are pretty vocal in their love of their city. The cities are also known for their crazy wacked out plans to elevate their city. The best example of NYC was the Gridiron plan which came in AFTER the city had already been around for 200 years and the best example is Atlanta bidding for the Olympics (and getting it) when we really no business even thinking about it.

5. The relative position of power each city holds in their respective regions. New York City is without a doubt is the most powerful city in the Northeast. Atlanta without a doubt is the most powerful city in the Southeast.

WHAT IT DOES NOT MEAN

1. That Atlanta and NYC look anything like.

2. Have anything in common about how they were built.

3. Have anything in common in what people migrated there (well, the hundreds of thousands of former New Yorkers that now live in Atlanta withstanding)

4. To literally mean that Atlanta is literally New York City reincarnated in the South. This one especially is never meant when people say Atlanta is the "New York of the South". Ever. If you are interested in finding which city that really is, I'll save you the trouble and tell you it does not exist. It is not Miami nor is it New Orleans. It is ESPECIALLY not New Orleans.

In what way? And how is your petty obsession with pointing this out somehow "cool", boss?

I can see this being the case in the 19th century and probably pre-civil war when NO may have been the largest city in the south and was probably very sophisticated, mature and worldly compared to the mostly rural south and little towns like Atlanta or Houston or conservative and proper places like Savanah and Charlston. Remember how Rhett took Scarlet to NO on their honnymoon so as to impress her?

It's merely an observation, nothing more. You might want to look up the word 'obsession' in the dictionary because it obvious that you don't know what it means.
