Which college town in the Southeastern Conference do you think is the best? It can be anything such as an attractive place to live with stable economy or the best one when it comes to college spirit.
1. Athens, GA (University of Georgia)
2. Auburn, AL (Auburn University)
3. Baton Rouge, LA (Louisiana State University)
4. Columbia, SC (University of South Carolina)
5. Fayetteville, AR (University of Arkansas)
6. Gainesville, FL (University of Florida)
7. Knoxville, TN (University of Tennessee)
8. Lexington, KY (University of Kentucky)
9. Nashville, TN (Vanderbilt University)
10. Oxford, MS (University of Mississippi "Ole Miss")
11. Starkville, MS (Mississippi State University)
12. Tuscaloosa, AL (University of Alabama)
These are definitely a mix of different city types. You have the true college towns where the university and the town are basically one and the same like Oxford, Athens, Fayetteville, Auburn, etc., then your larger cities which don't completely revolve around the university but it still has a significant presence as a major fixture on the local scene (Baton Rouge, Columbia, Knoxville, Lexington). Nashville is obviously the largest city on the list and is in its own category as a mid-major metro area where the university is just one piece of a much larger puzzle.

I agree!
Everyone has their own preferences. For me, I personally prefer medium-sized college towns with strong college spirit such as Athens, Baton Rouge, Columbia, Fayetteville, Gainesville, Knoxville, Lexington, and Tuscaloosa.
Auburn, Oxford (gorgeous town), and Starkville are too small for my taste.
Nashville is fine to live, work, and play but not necessarily for college unless you can afford your major at top ranked Vanderbilt University.
Baton Rouge is becoming large but its still very much LSU and nothing else.
The vast majority of that cities identity lies with the university and its athletics.

And I'm sure being the state capital also figures in there somewhere as well.

Gosh, you are so informative it is mind boggling.................
Athens, Ga. I would say it's far and away the "best." Nashville is a good city too.
Athens is a charming college town with great music scene. I don't know if it's true but people complain about the lack of higher pay jobs in Athens by Atlanta, GA's standards.
Athens also benefits from its close distance to Atlanta as well.
I don't know much about Baton Rouge itself but I do know that LSU football is like a religion down there just like it is in Knoxville due to UT.
