jump in property crimes is suspicious, could be a change of a good robbery to a theft from person, good carjacking to uumv ect.

I guess the two that are surprising to me are Springfield IL and Rockford IL. I've never heard that those two places were especially violent and/or dangerous.

Flint, Oakland, Baltimore... yeah you see those names pretty frequently in these lists.

Rockford, Springfield and Lowell being in the top 25 are pretty suprising. Also St Louis at number 4 (to me anyway).

Like alot of New Yorkers, I tend to have the "Fairfield County" image of Connecticut that is very simplistic. With problem areas like Hartford and New Haven, its not all wealthy beautiful suburbs anymore, although the state as a whole is still one of the nicest around.

Btw, we should not forget the main point and that the crime rate continues to go down across much of the nation.

This is the reason why Rockford and Springfield are listed, both these cities have seen jumps in their violent crime numbers compared to last two decades (80's and 90's), while other bigger cities have fallen.

Springfield Police Dept, Illinois
2005 - 1,569
2006 - 1,691
2007 - 1,849
2008 - Not all agencies participate in the voluntary UCR program and therefore are not reflected in the data.
2009 - 1,356

note these are the total number of crimes.

compton's really cooled down over the past few years. murder rate is in the 20s per 100,000. that's damn good considering neighborhoods in these cities listed like baltimore could easily have neighborhoods with murder rates of 100+ per 100,000.

Oh, that explains it then. Hispanics in LA never commit violent crimes.

I think what some people are forgetting is that these rates, while they apply to the entire city is the rate for every part of the city.

Many parts of these cities have lots of neighborhoods with substantially lower violent crime rates.

On the other hand, a few really crime ridden neighborhoods can drag down an otherwise very nice city.

That's what's so crazy about Oakland. The good neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods are polar opposites. Considering its overall crime rate its amazing how crime free some of the hill neighborhoods - really like almost half the city is. The downside is that the bad hoods are that much worse. Glad to see the drops it has been having recently though. Richmond too.
