i dont want the "california vs. georgia" thread to become too off topic, but this is something i want to get my thoughts out.

nyc and chicago pretty much run their states, and pretty much their whole regions. most people in ny state and illinois live around new york city and chicago, either directly in the city or in the suburbs.

i argue that cali is the same way since the la area is 50% of california, and the city of la is by far and away the largest city in california.

i'm not saying that upstate ny, downstate il, or northern cali are irrelevant, im just arguing that they are all alike in that they all take a deeeeeep back seat to the primate city and metro areas in their states. hell, nyc's suburbs spill into two other states, and it can be argued that nyc runs new jersey.

so is northern cali like upstate ny and downstate il?

I don't think so. Chicago is similar in NYC's metropolitan area where it spills into 3 states and I also think the difference is Chicago and NYC's location are at the very furtherest corners of their states. California is much too balanced IMO.

California is pretty balanced with San Fran and Sacramento to counter the LA/San Diego areas. The northern part of the state is my favorite.

Noway! SF runs Nocal and LA runs Socal.

The state is big enough to support two major cities and regions.

Illinois has Chicago and thats the epicenter for everything Illinois and NYC pretty much the same for NY State just like Atlanta for GA. California isn't like that where the epicenter is shared by two major cities whether it be education, politics, fortune 500 companies, etc...

LOL, prepare to have your perceptions on California stomped on again, kid! Every time you post one of these polls, it goes in the opposite direction of what you expected by a landslide. That should tell you something!

Since so far, you're the only person that's voted "yes," obviously not!

Yep, California is in no way like Illinois or New York from this particular perspective. The relationship between Boston and Western Mass is comparable to the NYC/upstate and Chicago/downstate, right down to the three state metropolitan area in the dominant CSA. But California is quite different in this regard. Pennsylvania and Texas would be more comparable to California for this analysis.

No, because there are many beautiful and interesting things in Northern California and Upstate NY.

Illinois outside of Chicago is basically corn fields.

Does LA dominate California? No!

LA is the biggest metro in our state and perhaps our most popular city to outsiders but LA does not make up California, especially when there are several other major cities/metros (SF, SJ, Sac, SD).

NYC and Chicago or Minneapolis or Atlanta dominate their respected states, because they are the cultural, political, and economic hub of NY, IL, MN, and GA.

But in California, LA is entertainment dominant, SF is political and social dominant, SJ is technology, SD is military, and Sac is where laws are passed which not only affects our cities in CA but around the nation. Each metro is unique.

LA does not run this state!
