We moved here 5 years ago. Have never regretted it. We have lived all over the Eastern US (I am a corporate mercenary). Greenville is 'just right'. Weather, economy, geography, you name it ..... Greenville wins in most discussions that address the totality of the question.
Knoxville is considerably larger than Gainesville, so on football Saturdays you'll be inconvenienced only if you want to do something in the neighborhoods around campus. Otherwise, you won't notice any difference anywhere else in town.
Thanks! I hadn't thought about that. I do like college football, but I am not a diehard fan. I got tired of the way practically everyone in Gainesville lived for the Gators and actually would put down people that didn't think the Gators ruled the world. This was made worse by the fact that I had previously gone to FSU and was a seminoles fan, but it would have been that way even if I wasn't a seminoles fan.

I've tried to like Greenville and I do, but outside of the downtown area, I just dont think it's as neat and clean as Orlando.
Do you see this as Greenville's suburbs are older than Orlando suburbs and therefore aren't "as neat and clean"? If it is something else can you please expand on this? Also, I'm wondering if you think this is partially because there isn't what some people would say "as much to do" in Greenville as Orlando?
Not just the suburbs, but just the city itself. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather live in Greenville than most surrounding areas other than probably Asheville, but Asheville's c.o.l. is much higher.
If you're familiar with Colonial/50 in Orlando, a lot of Greenville just reminds me of it. Again, not bashing Greenville, I like Greenville, but outside of downtown, it's not as pretty (in my opinion). If you know Orlando like I do, I just think that places like Lake Eola, Winter Park, Thorton Park, etc are awesome and very walkable areas with cool places to walk, eat and shop. Downtown Greenville is really nice with restaurants, shops, etc. It's just a very small area, but of course, Greenville is not a big city so it's downtown isn't going to be very big at all.
That helps alot to explain it to me. I have lived in Orlando for a total of 4 years over the course of 13 years. My parents have been here the whole 13 years, so I've also visited throughout the whole time. I actually have very rarely gone to areas like Lake Eola and Winter Park's downtown area in that time. Those areas are great and a fun day, but just not my scene for regular hanging out. I've read alot about Asheville and got to know someone very well that is from there and went back. From what I've read and what she told me I think it would be somewhere I'd like to visit occasionally, but not my scene for place to live. Greenville does seem to have a big Pro to me that is it much closer to cities to visit than the other cities I am comparing. I also think I would much rather be closer to Charlotte and Asheville in Greenville than Atlanta, Birmingham, and Nashville in Chattanooga. I can't wait until I get to actually visit to see how I feel then. It will be very interesting if what cities I think I will like best changes.
Chattanooga is far superior to Greenville, a really boring place...........
Both have very similar amenities, probably with Greenville having a slight edge because it's slightly larger. Chattanooga is in a more scenic location though. There's a good bit of stuff to do in Greenville.

Chattanooga is only about 20 miles or so closer to Atlanta than Greenville, so proximity to Atlanta is still a plus for Greenville.
Greenville is almost in a different league than the other two, even though they are similar in size. For what you want, I would go with Greenville.
