Hello I have a mother and father (he is disabled had a massive stroke years back) who are in their mid 50's I'm 19 years gonna be 20 in a few months. My mom and I want to find an affordable city (the suburb of NYC, Long Island is def too expensive) preferably an urban area due to public transit and walkableness (easy to get around without having to own a car) with appartments with affordable rents. We currently live in North Lindenhurst NY

What we would prefer most importaint 3things
  1. Small appartment (1 or 2 bedroom) for around $1,000 per month (that has to be wheelchair handicap excessable; as in has an elevator, so if we live an a multi story building my dad doesn't have to clime any stairs)
  2. Place doesn't have to be super safe there can be some crime, but not the kind of constant shooting/stabing, gangs, drugs kinda thing (And yes I realize drugs are everywhere and so are gangs now a days but I DON'T want to move into a place like lets say North Amityville or Wyandanch) (I currently live in North Lindenhurst which I feel is definately safe)
  3. Place thats easy to get around without needing to own a car (for example NYC has subways, buses which make it easy to get around and like 50% of people I've heard don't drive there, but I don't really know if that stuff exist in other places) (It would be cool to be able to walk to some local stores)
Additionally
Btw It would be nice for my sake to live in a place with young people so I could make friends (Always lived here so kinda nervous about that). Also continue my education at a local college (I currently go to Suffolk CCC in Brentwood) so I would really like to continue my education.

Btw We don't absolutely have to live right in the city we could live in the outskirts of a major city if any place fits my criteria well

Finally I would like to add my mom has the $ not me I'm just helping her by putting this out there.

ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED

Look into the Capitol Hill area of Denver, Colorado. I moved to Long Island from Denver so if you would like more info on that, message me!

Philly has a lot of good options and so does Chicago. Areas in these two cities are really the best deals around right now in terms of cost compared to amenities.

Pittsburgh has a lot of amenities and is very affordable but doesn't have particularly good mass transit right now.

All of those, but you should use google more often because you'll get at that kind of information a lot faster than if you just waited for people on this forum. The search function on this forum is also pretty good--and once you've found a city you're really interested in, I'd suggest going to that city's forum and scanning/searching through the topics for people who have also made the move from the NYC metro area (for Philly, there's quite a few).
