The Chicago area has actually bled away most of its heavy industrial jobs in the past 40 years or so. It's why the city went through so much trauma during the 70's through early 90's before finally stabilizing (not withstanding the current economic downturn which hit most of the country).

Chicago area jobs:

Total: 5,200,472

Manufacturing: 383,133
Transportation & Warehousing: 249,427
Utilities: 11,878
Total: 644,438 (12%)

Finance/Other Services/Management/Professional: 1,143,734
Education/Healthcare: 734,083
Government: 546,882
Retail: 480,255
Accommodation: 328,045
Addministrative: 367,250
Arts and Entertainment: 111,865
Real Estate: 240,993
Total: 3,952,107 (76%)

The remaining parts are things like wholesale trade. The manufacturing sector has been shrinking for decades now.

The Seattle area is home to Boeing's commercial airplane division. PACCAR (Kenworth & Peterbilt trucks) is also based in the area as are shipyards. Heavy industry (Boeing) built Seattle.

Houston has more Heavy manufacturing than Philly. If you are gonna move one up you might as well move both. In fact based on the numbers posted by someone above Houston has more overall manufacturing jobs too. So does the Bay Area

Houstoun would be in the top teir above Philly. You're right, Houston does have a higher amount of heavy indutry jobs (and obviously a higher percentage).

I think it was nice that he narrowed it down AT ALL, with hard facts, nonetheless!
