Without Springfield Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids ect would be small cowtowns, and Ford, GM, Crysler, Honda, BMW, Toyota ect. Wouldn't exist without the Internal combustion engine.

Cool thread. Not really sure if this fits because Germantown is now a neighborhood in Philadelphia and there are many cities and metros that have contributed more on a wider scale, but from 1683-1854 Germantown was considered a separate city and has tons of history for being such a small area and township.

-1683 10/06 Germantown is founded and it is now celebrated across the US as "German-American Day"
-1688 The birthplace of the anti-slavery movement in The United States. There are still Underground Railroad stops open to the public
-1690 First Paper Mill in the United States is in Germantown
-1743-First Bible printed in America is made in Germantown
-1777 Site of the "Battle of Germantown" during the Revolutionary War
-1793 George Washington stayed in Germantown in what would be known as "The Germantown White House". It is the oldest surviving Presidential residence. The First Bank of The United States was also located in Germantown during his administration.
-1832 Louisa May Alcott, author of the novel Little Women, was born in Germantown

William Penn Charter School-Oldest Quaker school in the World.

Some other notable residents:
Benjamin Chew
Charles Darrow-Inventor of the Monopoly Game
Maggie Kuhn-Founder of the Gray Panthers
Connie Mack-Winningest Manager in MLB history
Robert McNeil-Developer of Tylenol
Edmund Rudolph-First United States Attorney General
Grover Washington Jr
Bernard Hopkins
Bill Cosby

That was obviously incredibly important. This would be a pretty boring thread without a few other perspectives though!

I know, Springfield, Omaha, and several other cities could all claim it. It will be intrestingly to see what other small cities gave contributed to America because Boston, New York, Philly, Chcicago, San Fran ect get too much credit IMO.

True and the author of the Wizard of Oz was born and raised in Chittenango(Frank L. Baum), the 24 second shot clock was invented there, the percursor to the Ferris wheel was invented here and first used at the NY State Fair, the first Black professional Baseball and Basketball players played a part of their careers here and so did one of the first Black athletes to play QB in College Football(as did the first Black Heisman Trophy winner), the Brannock Device was invented here(the thing that measures your feet for shoes), many people in show business were born and/or grew up in the area like Tom Cruise, Richard Gere, Grace Jones and many others: List of people from Syracuse, New York - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also, SUNY-Oswego has produced some good people in journalism like Linda Cohn, Al Roker and Steve Levy. An Oswego native was the credited as the inventor of the Golf Tee, George Franklin Grant, who was also the second Black person to graduate from Harvard's Dental School.

Auburn(if it is included in the metro, sometimes is and sometimes isn't), is where John Walsh of America's Most Wanted fame was born and raised. Harriet Tubman lived there, as did the person responsible for the acquisition of Alaska, William H. Seward.

I'm probably forgetting some more things to mention as well.

Oswego, NY was the home to the only European Refugee camp in the US during WW2

Duluth, MN is where the majority of this country's taconite derives from, (a key ingredient in creating iron ore) and is shipped across the Lakes and to the Atlantic, where it is harvested and used for metals of all kinds.
