Birmingham does a lot better in the Fortune 1000. HealthSouth took a massive hit a few years ago but is still a pretty big company and just misses out on Fortune 500. Vulcan Materials, Torchmark Corp, and Protective Life are also not too far off from the Fortune 500.

What sucks for Bham is that it had a couple of prestigious headquarters like Saks Inc (which included the famous Saks 5th Avenue department stores). It was gobbled up by a mid level department store chain Belk. Another major company, Caremark...a medical prescription company, merged with drug store giant CVS and is now CVS/Caremark. The bank mergers also killed Bham on the list as they lost 3 Fortune 500 bank headquarters due to being so attractive to the huge monster banks buying them. For years it was cool to see Birmingham with more Fortune 500 headquarters than some much much larger metro areas. Omaha, a peer city, has managed to keep their headquarters because their companies have been so large for so long.

I am sure you are aware the current DFW corporations are second only to New York city corporations in revenue. DFW has the headquarters of the largest corporation on the planet. I bring this up out of hesitation.

These are younger cities and young economies. It takes time to reach the top of the Fortune 500. Many of the Fortune 500 are companies that have decades of history. Banking institutions for example are close to 100 years old. Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Diego were all small places back then.

Also for Los Angeles, motion pictures are a huge part of the economy and is largely centered in L.A., but owned by out of state conglomerates.

-- Sony Pictures based in Culver City, CA in So Cal ($9 billion in revenue 2011), 10% of the revenue of Sony Group of Japan.
-- Warner Brothers based in Burbank, CA in So Cal ($12.6 billion revenue in 2011), 41% of the revenue of Time Warner Group in New York.
-- Paramount Pictures based in Hollywood ($6 billion in revenue in 2011), 40% of the revenue of Viacom in New York.
-- Fox Entertainment Group in Los Angeles ($6.9 billion revenue in 2011), 20% of New Corporation.
-- Universal Pictures in Hollywood ($5 billion in revenue in 2011), owned by Comcast/GE now.

There are a lot of other sort of upstart cities on that list which were quite small up until the past half century.

Actually, I'm not entirely sure, but I believe LA actually did fairly well in these sort of rankings up until the recent few decades.

So, why hasn't anyone called out the fact that the "Bay Area" isn't an MSA? It's not a metro area. Give San Jose its due!

Exxon will be in Houston once the campus is complete. Watch for Chevron, too.

Exactly what I was just noticing, how mysteriously the "Bay Area" was listed as an MSA, but we all know it includes the entire CSA. While all the other metro areas, I'm assuming are just going off their MSA numbers and not combining, i.e. Washington DC MSA.
