Well, the population thread for the most populated cities has been done on here. We all know population has nothing to do with urbanity which is what most people on here care about, so here is another twist to it. What will be the top 5 densest cities over 500,000 by 2050?

Most likely contenders:

-Boston
-NYC
-Chicago
-Philly
-DC
-San Fran
-Baltimore

Predict what the top 5 will look like in 2050?

LA suffers in density comparisons because 25% of the city is uninhabitable mountains. Otherwise, I agree with your list.

Yeah for overall density which is overly simplistic. I like weighted density more, seems more accurate.

That being said, most likely LA will be over 10k by 2050

It is nearly impossible to predict what will happen by 2050, I would say the top 5 would be:
NYC, Boston, San Fran, Chicago, DC

However, I find city density (at least taking Population / land area) to be a little misleading, as cities are not the same size area wise so it is not apples-apples comparison.

I like to look at density in a much smaller, equal sized area; say, 22 sq miles (which is roughly the size of Manhattan). I think that list would look like this:

NYC, Chicago, San Fran, Los Angeles, Philly (with Boston slightly less than Philly and DC less than Boston).

Miami added 1000 ppl/sm from 2000-2010 to end the decade at ~400,000. I fully suspect that by 2020 Miami will add at least another 1000 ppl/sm since many of the residential towers built just prior to the last Census weren't occupied by the last Census date. If Miami continues that pattern (and there's no reason to assume that it won't), that puts Miami well over 500,000 in the city proper by 2050 in less than 36 square miles of land. Because it's still growing fairly rapidly and has such a small land area, I can't see how Miami isn't in the top five in 2050.

Most likely,

1) NYC
2) SF
3) Bos

after that it gets a little tricky:
some mix of Chicago, Philly and DC.

7) will be a contest between Seattle and LA (my guess is Seattle given its smaller footprint).

wild card: If Miami gets above 500k, it would probably be 3rd or 4th.

Los Angeles probably won't "officially"
crack the top 5 in our lifetimes.
