And NYC isn't even close to L.A and I don't understand why some people would think NYC is first.
NYC beats LA in tourism dollars by a very large margin. It has a comparably large music industry and is a larger hub for fashion, publishing and print media (digital or paper). Its companies own most of the companies that make the film and television segment of LA, but it plays a (pretty good) second fiddle to LA in terms of production. All in all, I think it's a pretty good match for LA in terms of being an entertainment capital.

The most important thing though is that media production, even within just the realm of English-language entertainment and even more so when we consider all other languages, has rapidly spread out in terms of production such that no city has a majority of production anymore--as opposed to the 80s and 90s when LA easily had a majority role for English-language productions. While NYC has made significant gains against LA in terms of film and television production in the last decade and a half, that was more a function of LA losing ground to various other production centers (Louisiana, Texas especially Austin, Dublin, Vancouver, Toronto, Atlanta, London, etc.) rather than NYC increasing the number of productions. Meanwhile, entertainment dollars have shifted drastically towards internet provided entertainment and video game production.

New York also has Broadway, whose shows tour the country and world. There was a NY vs LA culture thread on here not long ago.

As for tourist entertainment, I'd choose New Orleans over Las Vegas. Vegas carries the bigger names and productions, but it's all prefabricated, while NO is homegrown.

Been to both cities: Las Vegas.

As a nation: New York City without question.

I think it depends on what you are talking about. LA for film, NY for plays & music, LV for extravagant shows. All do different things well. But the thing to remember is that the film companies in LA are owned by companies in NY. So maybe indirectly NY controls the film industry as well

Los Angeles is commonly known as "The Entertainment Capital of the World." It definitely deserves that title before Las Vegas does. New York isn't even in the poll, so it's a non-factor, but LA would still hold its place.

I would say New York, but if LA and Vegas are the only choices, then LA, obviously.

How is Vegas a world "entertainment capital"? It's obviously an enormous gambling center, but most entertainment mediums are completely absent from Vegas.

Not all the parent companies are based in NY (iirc most aren't) and that isn't much of an argument anyway. The movie studios are what count and the vast majority, in all sizes, are based in LA.

As for music, a study was done a few years ago determining where musicians flocked to. Los Angeles topped every genre but Country (2nd place) , Christian (5th) and Jazz (2nd) . Pretty strong hint as to where the music capital is located.

Vegas, especially for it's size, is absolutely fantastic at drawing people into the city from across the world.

(most recent number I could find for LA were off of their LA Convention and Tourism site... numbers are for 2012)
Los Angeles:
Total visitors: 41.4 million
International visitors: 6 million

Las Vegas:
Total visitors: 40 million
International visitors: 7 million +

LA metro population: 18,000,000
Vegas metro population: 2,200,000

So considering the area is 1/9th the population and yet we match LA's numbers as far as drawing people into the area... I would say there is nothing left to discuss.
If Vegas had HALF the population LA does, this debate would be laughable.

"Las Vegas visitors - additional information

In 2013, 39.67 million people visited the city of Las Vegas – slightly less than in 2012 which saw the highest visitor numbers on this timeframe. Visitor numbers dipped slightly in 2001 and 2002, most likely due to the early 2000s recession which affected the European Union in 2000/2001 and the United States in 2002/2003. A further decline around 2009 was, again, probably down to economic climate as the global recession hit that year. Visitor numbers have since recovered well and, in January 2014, a survey found that Las Vegas was the destination U.S. travelers would most like to visit within the next three years.

Las Vegas is located in the state of Nevada in the west of the United States. Census data from 2010 recorded the city’s population at over 580 thousand inhabitants. Las Vegas is most commonly known for its gambling resorts and nightlife, but the city is also a hub for business, conventions and meetings. Home to the third largest convention center in the U.S., the Las Vegas Convention Center, the city held over 22 thousand conventions in 2013.

Las Vegas is even more popular with leisure travelers than those who visit for business. As of April 2014, the Las Vegas Strip was the most visited tourist attraction in the world, beating all Disney resorts and even iconic landmarks, such as Niagara Falls. There is no doubt that many tourists visit the city for its famous casinos. Las Vegas is by far the largest casino market in the U.S., generating a gambling revenue of 6.21 billion U.S. dollars in 2013. It is also the location of the largest casino company in the world in terms of revenue, Las Vegas Sands."
