What's Chicago's plan? It's the most ambitious, most far-reaching, AND still plausible in terms of being built. Somebody please correct me if/when I'm wrong, but I believe the cities being connected start with (based on ridership, costs, benefits, etc.):
Some cities are developing their own regional plans, like I know there is talk of connecting Minneapolis with Duluth, MN and Rochester, MN; and I've heard Iowa badly wants to be connected to the larger Chicago hub system via the Quad Cities; and KC wants to be an extension of the Chicago-St. Louis line.
Aside from the imminent CA and Northeast systems, Chicago is the 3rd imminent hub-spoke system that I know of in the U.S......but there may be smaller systems that are just as imminent (i.e. Seattle, Denver, 3-C's in Ohio, Florida, etc.).
Yeah, I know that (already) there are multiple trains daily between Chi/Mke and Chi/StL. The first high-speed corridor in the Midwest is the Chi/StL route. They've already hit 110 mph on a small portion between Chi/StL and should have most of the route up to that in 2015 (track improvements and upgrades are virtually finished in most areas). Arguments about true high speed aside, it's a step closer to connecting the region. Official IDOT Illinois High Speed Rail - Chicago to St. Louis: Construction/Stations
