Often slighted for this reputation of grit and dirt, not so much the case anymore. Yes, the subway stations could use a facelift, they could get rid of what looks like moldy sheetrock type of ceilings for sure but more or less on ground level, the city has cleaned up quick since the first time I saw it in 1997. My last visit to New York was earlier this year. Long way since those days and the city is pretty good looking now that the grit factor becomes, well, less of a factor by the day.
The total focus is on the architecture and grand buildings now. To be fair though, I am talking about Manhattan, so I'm not entirely sure what the case with the other boroughs would be present day.
NYC is a pretty ugly city. From the air to the ground....What makes NYC impressive is simply the mass and scale of the city, but it's ugly for the most part especially when you compare it to it's counterparts like London and Paris.
NYC doesn't touch SF on beauty.
