I've noticed all my time being here that people really seem to love when cities have 'culture', as in symphony, opera, ballet, etc. Is this something people really go to? Doesn't seem like it is, and I don't know many people who say 'hey, let's go to the symphony on Friday night!'.

I don't do it EVERY week, but certainly I want to be able to take advantage of museums, theatre shows, comedy shows, symphony, music in the park, fundraising galas and dinners, etc.

I'm not into symphonies and ballet per se, but definitely other music venues such as going to jazz/big band concert, museums, theater, film festivals, etc.

Ravinia in Chicago is a big event throughout the summer.

I agree with grapico for the most part and most of the people I've known to be into symphony have been rich snobby people. I'm into good museums, art, food, and festivals for the most part. Some cities offer these amenities at a higher level and is preceived as more cultured.

I believe the misconception is that Culture is only Opera, Symphonies, and ballet. Culture is more than just that. Take Miami for example.

Miami's culture is in it's Dance and Music: Salsa, Tango, Reggae, and Dubstep. A person going to enjoy a symphony is no more snobby that a guy going to UMF Miami. Different taste for different people. Miami has beautiful art galleries and murals all over the city. There's an opera house, but that isn't the real culture of the city.

As the other people stated, Culture is also being able to go to a festival or fundraiser in the park, and basically having stuff to do in the city that isn't shopping or going to the movies.

Culture is irrelevant if you're not into Opera, symphonies, ballet, dancing, music, ect.

For me culture is important. Museums are great because I love to learn about history and music festivals are fun as well. It's a chance to mingle with people and enjoy yourself.

I don't consider culture to be comprised of museums, concerts, operas, or symphonies. Culture to me is the people, the accents, neighborhoods, street life, music, the food, the architecture, the politics, the intangibles, etc.

I know what you mean, but there are 2 things you have to consider.

1 - This is the City Vs. City forum, so people are going to pick apart and judge everything to draw differences.

2 - I don't think the average person on C-D represents the average person out in the general population.
