I can't find the thread, but there was a study done comparing the amount of amenities (restaurants, shopping, food, nightlife) within a radius of downtown, within 25 square miles of downtown, only Chicago, SF and of course NYC had more total. The rest of the cities in this thread comparison were about two tiers below. People generally underestimate LA. It contains a vast area of extremely dense streetcar urbanity on steroids, not the same thing as completely auto-oriented sprawl.
