NYC hands down. Hip Hop was invented there in the 80's & reigns supreme world wide.

LA & Atlanta have their cultural niche, but its more a regional thing with those two cities.

NYC all day even though the region no longer dominates the genre in present time. The south has the biggest buzz right now for better or worse depending on who you are.

I feel that every decade a different region dominated the scene.
Hip-Hop/Rap was created in the Bronx NYC in the late 70s.
1980-89: HipHop was completely dominated by New York rappers.
1990-99: Although there was some southern and midwestern rappers. HipHop was heavily dominated by New York and LA.
2000-09: HipHop was heavily dominated by Northeastern and Southern rappers. With NY and Philly in the Northeast, and Atlanta and Houston down south.
2010-present time: HipHop is completely dominated by Chicago rappers. However, Atlanta, New York, Philly, and Miami are still producing a vibrant rap scene.

Rap has been completely dominated by the south for a long time now.

Why is Toronto even on the list? Anyway I agree with the above the south as a whole has pretty much dominated the rap/hip hop scene since the beginning of the new millennium. However in 2003 when 50 cent first came out New York was back on the map that year. But today the Dirty South largely dominates.

The Midwest is next up. The underground scene in Chicago is the rage these days, and Detroit is coming out swinging too. The Midwest doesn't have one defining sound though. You could say the "tongue twisting" multisyllabic style is the midwest trademark. I can't think of a starting 4 from any region who could hang with Eminem, Twista, Krayzie Bone, TechN9Ne in that style. Not just in speed, but in terms of finding pockets in the beat, flows within flows and still throwing in next-level lyricism and wordplay while rapping that fast. Then you have Bizzy Bone, Lupe Fiasco, Elzhi, and Royce the 5-9, and newcomers like Alex Wiley and Jon Connor who could rip 80% of the rap game in that style also.

Jon Connor - Detroit

Jon Connor - Michigan $hit feat. Royce Da 5'9 - YouTube

Alex Wiley - Chicago

Alex Wiley - Own Lane ft. None - YouTube

Heh, does anyone remember Maestro Fresh Wes or was he only big in Canada? I think that was the first big rapper in Canada in the late 80s.

Yeah, Toronto shouldn't even really be on the top 10 cities overall historically... You could put Oakland way above Toronto overall.

the only current artist from toronto are Drake and the weeknd. And i think drake is awful, I do like "the language" though but historically its NYC and then LA the past 10 years it was mostly Atlanta and all of its snap and trapping music but now LA is coming back strong, Atlanta isnt as hot as it once was, Chicago unfortunately is getting a lot of new ignorant rappers that talk about murder. NYC is still kind of old though not to many new rappers coming out of nyc besides a$ap mob
