I'm in tech sales and moved last year from Texas for a job in Tucson. Unfortunately, the company is failing, so I'm considering moving to Phoenix, due to its proximity to Tucson, and because more opportunity abounds.

However, I've been reading about Phoenix's hollow, service-oriented economy, driven largely by insurance and real estate, and am having serious concerns about landing a higher paying job there.

In Texas, I earned high five/low six figures. By comparison, Dallas (and Texas in general) is booming right now, due in large part to low taxes, a diversified economy, and a pro-business state government.

The DFW metro is literally busting at the seams with lots of corporate activity and relocations (namely from CA and the east coast) and boasts many high-paying, six-figure jobs in various industries.

I'm in my late twenties and anxious where to reboot my career. In my situation, would you try and settle in Phoenix, or throw in the towel and move to Dallas?

As much as I like Phoenix and dislike Texas, I have to admit that Texas would probably be a better opportunity.

The problem for me is I wouldn't be happy in Dallas, I'd rather make less in a place I'm happy. If that city works for you then jump on it! I'm not attune to the Texas way of life nor the flat/isolated geography there.

I think if you wanted to be in Phoenix you could, but it probably will be less money and take a little more time to find something. I would suggest talking to recruiters in both cities to gauge what's open right now, corporate relocations sound great but they don't always translate into lots of job openings. Also, to keep in mind, I've heard all this growth in Texas has lead to increasing prices for rentals as demand has soared. Just a few things to keep in mind, every rose has its thorn.

Dallas is a better city for business than Phoenix. Dallas has more Fortune 500 HQs and a better pro-business environment. For a city of its size, Phoenix has very few Fortune 500 HQs. Quality of jobs in the region is low.

You may not be at your current job forever, so it would be nice to know there are other options out there. Dallas provides that. Phoenix may not.
