which is the better city to live/vacation in as far as nightlife, scenery, crime, weather, shopping and selection of restaurants goes.
Beale Street is very cool. Not sure that there is anything quite like that in Calgary (or many cities for that matter). In everything else, except weather (although Memphis is very muggy too so that isn't clear either), Calgary by a longshot. With Banff 1 hour to the west and Glacier 3 hours to the south, I don't know that there is a city surrounded by more beautiful scenery on the planet.

I haven't been to either, but given the choice I'd definitely go with Calgary. Probably to spend a night and a day in the city and then head out to Banff/Jasper and take in the majesty of the Canadian Rockies. I guess one could take in Edmonton just up the road as well while visiting Alberta.
If I were to go to Tennessee I'd skip Memphis, head back to Nashville again and probably head east towards the Smokies.
Memphis by a mile - what sort of unique cultural offerings are in Calgary?? Memphis is packed with history, incredible southern cooking, and music around every corner. It's dirty, it's a bit dangerous, but it has soul. Calgary does not.
Memphis for food. Although Calgary may have more multicultural offerings. I have to say though, Rendezvous and Gus's... Dang.
I'm guessing Calgary has quite a bit of multiculturalness, and an incredibly vibrant and safe downtown, more safe than many suburbs for that matter. Keep in mind, Calgary is home to the Calgary stampede, I'm sure it has some kind of cool western/mountain flair.
As someone who has lived in Memphis, I'll go with Calgary.
Memphis reached its peak a while ago. You can say it still has "culture" but what's left is only a shell of what it used to be. Calgary is far more dynamic.
Calgary is a lot of things, I suppose, but "dynamic" really isn't one of those. I would say that word would describe Memphis quite nicely, even with its serious poverty/crime issues.
I mean, what specifically is uniquely "dynamic" about Calgary? I admit I've only been there for a couple days, but not much really stood out about it for me. Memphis I've returned to time and time again.
I can't say much about Downtown Calgary, apart from that it has a downtown that is among the safest and most livable on the planet. Perhaps it doesn't have as much "soul" as Memphis does, but Memphis didn't even really seem to have any walkable areas apart from Beale Street (I could be wrong though).
Calgary is an hour from what I think many might characterize as the most beautiful place on earth. THAT is pretty dynamic LOL
