No it doesnt. SF 47 is more urban than LAs and that includes golden gate park and the Presidio. Weighted density makes the gap for SF way larger. SF is far denser than any section of LA, big parks and all and weighted density makes it laughable to even compare the 2

You can draw a 47 square miles that includes as much greenspace as SF has and have about the same population density. A core 47 square mile area that includes downtown LA can also include Elysian Park, Los Angeles State Historic Park, and the vast Griffith Park along with smaller parks.

Core LA has a ~15 sq mile tract that has something like 415k in it. So no SF is not "far denser than any" section of LA lol

Why do people always say LA is "suburban" even if it is its a super dense suburban area bigger and more populaous than many entire states

I despise when people say that. A city of nearly 4 million and metro of nearly 14 million is nowhere close to small town in any feel.

Ignorance from people that have never actually spent time there.

Perhaps it's an intentional thing on part of Hollywood elite, to be able to keep prices down "enough" that some creatives are still able to exist there (not doing a great job, but it's at least cheaper than SF). And would likely go up if it's reputation was that of an urban utopia. A lotta people hate LA.

Also it really is sprawled out quite a bit outside of that core area-and that matters, and not just to perceptions, but to reality. This transit map is pretty decent by North American standards... but is it decent for a Greater Region of 18 Million People? This matters... because especially now, the creative class and global rich are pricing most out of those core neighborhoods honestly...

Also... LA's dense urban housing doesn't seem to take on a distinctive look in popular media, and it really isn't shot there in movies or if it is.. it's like Compton or South Central LA in some crime film, typically.

People's popular perception of LA housing is:

Working class LA might occasionally be pictured like this:

But this... https://www.google.com/maps/@34.0586...92!5m2!1e2!1e4

while dense, isn't considered as interesting looking a film location, as this:

But LA does get way more representation of lifestyles than 99.9% of places on earth so gotta take the good with the bad in that case. You get to seee white LA, Latin LA, Black LA ,Rich LA, poor LA, apartment LA....actor LA, police LA, gang LA, business La, surfer LA. Anyone who wants can see a lot of LA.

San Francisco core 47 is denser than LA fore 47 by a substantial amount. Just look up recent numbers. Also to be even more fair, why dont you calculate the large green areas in SF that have nothing built on it. SF is the only city outside NYC that has census tracts over 100k ppsm. Nothing in LA comes close. Weighted density makes the lead for SF even more insane. LA is a suburban city which is why I love it. We have front yards, back yards, side yards, aren't built to the curb and dont have loud public transportation everywhere. We certainly donr feel like a small town but we feel like a big one. SF feels insane to me with its density like NYC makes me feel while LA has big town vibe
