To me, Oakland has a big city feel and Sacramento doesn't. If you compare Sacramento with the other large cities in the Central Valley--Fresno and Bakersfield--Sacramento looks a lot better. But it's not a very walkable city--only 24% of Sacramento residents live in neighborhoods with a walkscore of 70 or above. In Oakland, by contrast it's 57%. Oakland's transit is a lot better. Oakland, now more than ever (or more than for a long time) is a cultural/gastronomic/intellectual hub in a way that Sacramento simply isn't. Oakland of course has Berkeley to north and San Francisco to the east, so one of its advantages is that it has regional access to so much.
[quote=armstrong;28325350]Which city would you folks prefer to live in?
factor in the following:
-cost of living Sacramento Lower housing costs and higher income
-weather Oakland- awesome weather
-quality of life Sacramento QOL combination of commute times, crime, walkability
-public transportation Oakland. Although if you live and work close to light rail it's not bad in Sacramento
-walkability Sacramento Downtown/midtown Sacramento is very walkable
-crime Sacramento
-nightlife Oakland
-food/restaurant scene Number of restaurants- Oakland; Zagat rated highest Sacramento
-music scene Sacramento
-dating scene Oakland (less married people)
-nature/outdoor activities Sacramento
-culture/diversity Culture -neither (neither spends much on the arts) Diversity Oakland
-entertainment Sacramento Oakland wins if you consider driving out to SF
-economy Sacramento
-cost of living Sac
-weather Oakland
-quality of life Oakland
-public transportation Oakland
-walkability Oakland
-crime Sac
-nightlife Oakland
-food/restaurant scene Oakland
-music scene Oakland
-dating scene if straight, Sac/if gay, Oakland; the straight dating scene is Oakland is better than SF though
-nature/outdoor activities within the city:Oakland/outside of the city: Sac
-culture/diversity Culture: Oakland Diversity: Oakland
-entertainment Currently Oakland... when the A's and the Warriors leave, Sac
-economy Sac
I like Sac but prefer Oakland... I could see how someone else would prefer Sac. I definitely agree though that Oakland is more of an urban city than Sac is and it isn't because it's next to SF... Oakland's layout is much more conducive to pedestrians than Sac's is and there isn't anywhere near as much space between areas with something going on as there is in Sac.
-cost of living - Sac
-weather - Sac (like the warm summer nights)
-quality of life - Sac
-public transportation - Oakland
-walkability - Oakland
-crime - Sac
-nightlife - Tie
-food/restaurant scene - Oakland
-music scene - Oakland
-dating scene - Oakland
-nature/outdoor activities - Sac (like all the boating, rivers, and lakes)
-culture/diversity - Tie
-entertainment - Oakland
-economy - Oakland (close to strong job centers)
Oakland qua Oakland is a zero. The only benefit to living in Oakland is that its next to Berkely and across the bay from "The City". It is the Dayon of the Bay Region.
Sacramento, while nothing special, does have its own thing going on so would be more interesting.

There isn't much to say to that other than that it's a very ignorant comment on many levels that I doubt is based on little more than preconception.
