Me and my friend are contemplating whether to move to Vegas or Atlanta. I guess I should start with some info about me..

I am 21 years old. I live in Detroit, and I'm trying to move by January.
I'm currently in community college but I have not received my associates degree yet. I will tell you when I tell people I'm planning to move to either Vegas or Atlanta, I get so many mixed reviews. I really can't get a true feeling or idea from people unless they live there or have lived there. I get some people saying Atlanta is another Detroit which is what I'm trying to move away from. I hear people saying unless I want to work in the casino or entertainment field, I won't find a legit job in Vegas..

I can tell you personally I think both places would be nice to live in. I love how Vegas is a 24 hr city, but I hear Atlanta shuts down pretty early. I was actually surprised to hear that Atlanta doesn't have any casinos, which isn't a HUGE deal, but given me and my friend don't really like going to clubs in Detroit anymore, that has become our hangout spot. I'm not too concerned about crime in either places cause once you've lived in Detroit your whole life, nothing surprises me anymore. I'm just really fed up with the weather here and the people.

I only considered Atlanta because I thought they had a good nightlife but I've been hearing the city is Overrated. I applied to Delta, hoping I would get the job since training starts in January. If I went to Vegas, I would apply for Leasing Consultant positions since obviously I wouldn't move across the country without a legit job.
I just need helping figuring out which city would be better for me. There are pros and cons to both like Vegas having terrible hospitals and terrible drivers! As a young black female, which city would I thrive better in? And which areas in both cities are good to live in? Could I eventually start a family in either of these cities. Are there reliable churches I can attend? I visited both places and liked them both, but if anyone can offer their opinions that would be great!

It really depends on what you are looking for. Atlanta is the "it" these days for those looking to move. However I don't particular prefer it. They is no right or wrong answer. I know at least 10 people from the "D" who live in the Vegas who have moved here in the last 5-6 years. Go with your gut and make the best decision that you feel is right.

Used to live 3 hours from Atlanta and visited often.

Vegas has better entertainment, weather(no humidity), better surrounding areas(California, Utah, Arizona), better outdoors.

Atlanta has better schools overall, but it isnt by much. Georgia has a lot of greenery, something Vegas has none of(there is MT Charleston 45 min from Las Vegas)

Atlanta does shut down kind of early, and there are some cool bars there. But vegas has so many bars to get into with different vibes.

Vegas is awesome. I cant think of anything Atlanta beats Vegas in except I miss going to Braves games/Falcons. But that is offset with going to the california beaches on a weekend and catching a San Diego Chargers game or LA Dodgers game.

Very familiar with both cities, and I have to say with certainty, the better choice is LV.

Honestly, you can't go wrong with either one, especially coming from Detroit. Heck, the traffic alone in ATL makes Vegas the better choice.

Only things ATL has going for it is Zaxby's, vidalia onions, and sweet tea.
But that traffic'!'@$

Diversity of career options is much better in Atlanta, but if you find something you like and can do well at Vegas can work too.

That whole "another Detroit" thing is usually a backhanded way of people saying that Atlanta is getting "too Black;" otherwise, besides the cities' roles in the music industry, they really aren't that alike. Atlanta has lagged most of its peers in recovering from the recession, but that hardly makes it "another Detroit." The city of Atlanta is healthy and booming with lots of new urban development all around.

As far as nightlife, I guess almost everywhere will shut down early compared to Vegas. Atlanta's heyday with respect to nightlife was really in the 90's up to the mid-2000's or so. There's still a good bit of nightlife here, but it's more scattered with the largest concentration being in Midtown; last call in the city is 2:30am, except the Underground area downtown where establishments have last call at 4am. Neighboring Dekalb County also has last call at 4am.

As a young Black female, your social options in Atlanta will be quite plentiful and there's certainly no shortage of churches here to choose from. I think your choice will ultimately boil down to your priorities in a place to live, and of course which city you get a job in.

Thanks for the info! I have family in Atlanta and they love it. I think both places I would do just fine. I do hate though how people are saying it's becoming another Detroit, especially those who have never lived in Detroit and don't know how it is here. Detroit has a wonderful nightlife. If it wasn't for the weather or crime I would stay here. Unfortunately that won't change so I'm ready to go! I have til January to make my decision, and hopefully it's a good one.

I did hear the schools in Vegas suck, which is why my sister won't move with me because she's in elementary education. I also heard doctors there are terrible and some people go to Cali just for doctor appointments. Other than that, I think Vegas probably will fit me better but thanks for the information!

I hear traffic is terrible. Personally I don't even like driving during the day because of traffic. Can't stand it! And we have 5-6 freeways to use, but maybe I should stop complaining about our traffic since I hear it's way worse down in ATL.

You do realize Atlanta has a higher crime rate than Detroit, right? Most people moving from north down to Atlanta assume it's safer. It's not.

The areas in Atlanta that are nice and safe are very expensive. So if you can't afford to get into a nice area, you need to concern yourself with crime and bad schools just as much. Atlanta has consistently ranked on the FBI's top ten most dangerous cities list every year for the last near 20 years. I think this year is the first year it hasn't made that list. So at least crime is going down there (mostly due to more poor people moving to the suburbs), but still, Atlanta has a lot of crime.

Atlanta is also a hard place to get a job and the salaries there are low. The state of Georgia was recently ranked as having the second worst unemployment rate in the country. The grass isn't always greener. I know things are bad in Detroit, but don't assume everything's all rosy in Atlanta. It isn't. I left there and couldn't wait to get out. A lot of people love it there though. If you can get a job there, that would be a huge feat.

If you are into black men, they are either gay or players, as there are so many single black women in Atlanta that men have their pick. Also a lot of gay black men attend church there. So the pickings of straight, available black men that have anything going for themselves is slim. Atlanta is a mecca for gay black men.

I personally don't think that Atlanta is a good place for single black women. I lived in Atlanta for almost 17 years so I am speaking from actual experience. The horrible dating situation is one of the reasons why I left. Well, that and the lack of jobs.
