Well the good thing in your case is that if you were to get the Delta job, you could live within short driving distance of a MARTA station and take the train to the airport and at least wouldn't have to deal with as much traffic on your daily commute.

With respect to crime, it's pretty localized and the higher crime areas are to the west and south in the city proper. The safer parts of the city do tend to be more expensive, but you can easily live in a safe, affordable close-in suburban area, mainly in areas to the north of the city.

The crime is not localized. Folks get robbed (and often shot in the process) in the yuppie/wealthy areas there too. I'd say the crime there is more random due to the street robberies. I'm not saying one has to fear for their lives everywhere they go, but let's not pretend the crime only happens there in the hood. They target folks in the wealthy areas there too.

Armed robberies of businesses and pedestrian armed robberies happen a lot there. Hell, one of my friend's former college mates was just shot and killed there when his restaurant was robbed a few months ago.

That's no different from any other city where you'll have some crime happening in more affluent areas; that's not unique to Atlanta and I certainly wasn't suggesting that ALL crime happens in certain parts of town. It's clear that there are certain crime hot spots but more areas that aren't. Here's a map that shows this: Trulia Local - Visual analysis of local data

I feel you but I just think people need to be honest and stop letting others who are coming from crime-ridden cities think that they are going to a safer place by moving to Atlanta when it's just not true. Atlanta's crime rate is higher than NYC's, LA's, Philly's, Chicago's and Detroit's; and this information is very easily verified as long as people are willing to look it up for themselves. Many of Atlanta's suburbs are also unsafe. Yes it is some areas where it happens more but a new person who is being given the impression that Atlanta is safer won't do enough research.

I also don't want to give the impression that Atlanta is a war zone that you have to fear for your life where ever you go. That's not my intention. The notion that Atlanta is safer or has less crime is utterly false. The opposite is what is true that needs to be made clear so people don't move there with a false sense of security. That false sense of security will cause them to not do enough research and move into a bad area in the city. I remember my mom would call me when she first moved to Atlanta with a distressed tone in her voice complaining about how bad the crime is there. She said she had no idea the crime was so bad was in Atlanta. Someone even tried to break into her place the very first night in her new apartment in the Atlanta area. We never ever experienced break-ins in or been crime victims in our lives until we moved to the Atlanta area; and we are from the southwest side of Chicago (albeit a good neighborhood )

A lot of people still don't research crime statistics before moving to Atlanta. I think this is especially true for people from places like Detroit and the bad neighborhoods of Chicago who seem to make up a great number of Atlanta's Chicago Transplants. They just assume that because it's in the south it's safer. Major cities in the south have higher crimes than the major cities in both the midwest and the northeast.

One day when I was researching crime stats, I made a list of the crime rates for all the major cities I looked up and put them in order by those numbers. Once I took a step back and looked at it, I realized that the further the south you went, the higher the numbers got.

I come across news stories every now and then where people who moved from bad neighborhoods in other cities to Atlanta for a better life only to get murdered in Atlanta. It saddens me when I hear stuff like this because it means that people didn't do their research. If they had, they would've known they didn't pick a safer city by moving to Atlanta.

Also if she applied for any type of reservations agent job for Delta, that job typically pays $11 an hour. There's no way she'll be able to afford rent in Atlanta (or anywhere) on that salary IF that is the job she is going for.

Id take Vegas any day over Atlanta for several reasons: climate, scenery, nightlife, etc. Atlanta does have better schools, cooler weather (but way more humid), and greenery, but the city just kinda felt like a dud to me.

One major drawback about moving to Vegas (and one you should be concerned about) is the water situation. Its not a joke, and the situation has literally reached crisis levels. Id be quite uncertain about a long-term future in Vegas, simply because of the water situation.

I agree that people should do their research, on all fronts, when it comes to moving to Atlanta or elsewhere and that goes for picking a neighborhood to live in, applying for jobs, etc. Although more of Atlanta's suburbs are safe than not, you still can't assume that just's because it's suburbia its automatically going to be safe.

As far as her job/rent situation, remember she said she'd be moving with a friend and it sounds as though they'd be roommates.

No offense. But coming from Georgia I can't imagine living in a desert. I love the beauty and variety of Atlanta and you can spend weekends at the Florida panhandle beaches which are way better than Cali beaches.

LOL at how this time of year all these City Data folks from other places start acting as if it's hot and humid all year long in Atlanta! The hot humid season is ending now and won't be back again until June next year. And it's not hot and humid everyday in the summer. In between it will be mostly nice weather with a just little bit of frigid weather in the winter.

Crime and traffic are an issue here but the Airport is one of those jobs where you can skip traffic and zoom to work on the train if you live near a station (buses run to all the stations with free transfer to a train btw.)

Unfortunately though the South Side (where the Airport is) isn't one of the safer areas (though my aunt lives there without too much trouble) and if you live in the South Side suburbs they are a bit safer but you wouldn't be able to take the train from them and traffic will be awful. The East Side and North Side are safer and you can catch the train but they are expensive.

To all those young people complaining about the job market in Atlanta here's my advice. Get yourself an education in one of many STEM areas (information tech and computer science may be a little over saturated, correct me if I"m wrong, but there are plenty of other fields.) Once you get a few years experience and gain competence you won't want for a job as there are plenty of places starving for experienced help. Worked for me.

Nite life is not bad at all in Atlanta but if nite life and casinos are your top priority you might want to go with LV.

It seems like half of the USA population is moving to Atlanta.. they have too many people and not enough jobs and LV has a g.od awful job market as well unless your in the service industry working at hotels, restaurants and casinos or in heath care. Good Luck with your move.

I was going to say the same thing earlier. Don't live near the airport because it's not safe. An acquaintance of mine had a young cousin who worked at the airport and he was shot and killed as someone tried to rob him on the way home from work.
